What are my LSD options?

For the 2003.5 6MT sedan that is. I talked to my service guy today, said the stock 2004 sedan LSD part costs $1600, and I could expect $500 or so for the install. Anyone know where I can get that part for cheaper?

For those who went the Nismo route on the 6MT, you also needed a new ring and pinion gear? A couldn't find the part #'s for those on a forum search.

Has anyone been the guinea pig on the Kaaz route?

One last option that I hadn't heard of: my service guy mentioned using the rear LSD off of the FX. He said using the LSD from an auto tranny would give me a lower gear ratio and faster 0-60 (assuming I can still get to 60). Also, since it's an infiniti part, unlike the Nismo for the 350Z, he said the ring and pinion would fit. The only reason he said to use the FX was that the 5AT 2004 G35's don't have an LSD. Of course, for the price I'd pay for that stock LSD, I might as well buy the $900 Nismo and the $500 ring and pinion.

Re: What are my LSD options?

Without pause, I say do not do a oem LSD swap, go the Nismo LSD route. Here's the deal. I did the oem swap. I managed to get a oem viscous unit with very little miles (14 miles tops) for only $100. BUT!!!, you are required to add parts to it to make the swap work, $400 in parts. That same viscous part at the Nissan parts counter sell's for $600 at a discount and remember I only paid $100 for it. Consider this, the Nismo LSD, it come's with all those parts I had to spend $400 extra to add on. Doing the math, I got really lucky at $500 in parts, but had I known in advance I would have gladly spend the extra $400 for the Nismo LSD, being a clutch type, it is vastly superior in being a slip limiting device a whole lot better at that, really wish I had the Nismo unit instead. Both the oem and the Nismo cost the same to install $400 on average.

New MT ring and pinion gear set's are ONLY required for owners of automatic transmission equipped cars wishing to do a LSD swap, MT equipped car's already of course have the MT ring and pinion gear set.

Re: What are my LSD options?

Thanks for the info and advice. I'll definitely be doing the Nismo.

Re: What are my LSD options?

make sure the nismo has all of the parts, I read somewhere that it does not. I tried doing a search, but came up with little... I hate this search engine. MAKE SURE FIRST.

Re: What are my LSD options?

What are the pluses and minuses of adding LSD? Is the LSD compatible with VDC? Will LSD reduce fishtailing? Will it provide more traction on snow and wet pavement than VDC alone?

Re: What are my LSD options?

No the Nismo is $900-$950 to buy and $400 to install, if you can get it installed and adjusted for just $300 great, but it's very much NOT the normal price. My OEM viscous swap was $500 in total parts cost and that was only because of the $100 deal of the century for the viscous unit. Install cost was $400

Yes, going the Nismo route would of cost me $400 extra, which I would have gladly paid, it's definatley $400 better than the oem LSD.

The Nismo unit comes with all the parts needed to do the swap. Those extra parts being, 2 stub axles, 2 bearing assemblies and their seals, plus diff oil. ** ONLY AUTOMATIC TRANMISSION CARS ARE REQUIRED TO BUY OTHER PARTS, THEY HAVE TO PURCHASE THE RING AND PINION GEAR SET MENT FOR A MT CAR, PLUS THE BEARINGS FOR SAID.**ADD AT LEAST $500 FOR THAT, IF you have a automatic trans.

Read the shop manuel on what is involved in doing such a swap and you will understand why you can't do it yourself and why it cost's what it does at the shop. Special tools are involved and a huge assortment of shim size's might be needed to align properly, which is critical for the health of the diff itself.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pluses are increased traction, especially when the inside wheel would normally spin. I have read post's that have blamed the OEM LSD for fishtailing, I have not been able to make that happen. The VDC is compatible with the VDC. Yes, slippery condition traction is improved. The Nismo LSD is a clutch type and will outperform the oem visous unit in it's job of being a slip limiting device. Also, know that the oem LSD system requires that it allow some wheel spin in order for it to lock up and limit slip. A clutch type responds to the initial torque application, it grips BEFORE wheelspin. That is part of the bane I am experiencing, getting slip before the diff lock's up, I'm hoping that when warm weather come's that it will lock faster, I dunno I live in mild California.

Re: What are my LSD options?

I wish Quaife America would supply an automatic torque biasing (ATB) differential for our application(s). Their ATB works with gears, so there are no clutches nor variably-viscous fluids to wear-out. These jewels are guaranteed for LIFE, even under race conditions. I had one on my '95 Maxima SE, and the performance of this piece was awe-inspiring. Maybe someday, after everybody on this board calls Quaife and asks them to stop fooling around, they will help us out!
