Did I get taken on this brake job?

Hi

New to the forum.

Did a search on this, but just need a specific answer.

Had a front brake job done at 37,000 miles. First time brake job. They charged me $590.00 for pads and new rotors. It's an '05 G35X

Never, ever had to replace rotors at this mileage. I don’t drive aggressively and the pads were not grinding. But they said they could not resurface because the rotors were too thin.

I'm seeking some kind of compensation for the rotors. But doubt if I will get it.

Next time I’ll buy the BMW instead.

Thanks

for rotors and brakes that seams resonable, next time you will spend an extra twelve grand on a comp. beemer to save a few hundred on a brake job.

Yes, new rotors and pads will cost around $500-$600 from the dealer in San Diego. For my 2003 G35 sedan, I had to replace them at 15,000 miles. For Beemers too, they often replace rotors and pads and don't resurface them. This isn't always the case, but it happened to me when I had a beemer a few years back. Now you can get a Beemer with full free maintenance for the warranty period of the car. But you really pay for it in the purchase price of the car...and you must stick to their service schedule.

That may have been a little high. Here is a list of parts I picked off a random web site for a 2004 BMW 325 Touring:

Rotors: $128.00
Brake Pad Sensor: $15.00
Pads: $65.00
Labor: $105.00

Total: $313.00

The labor is from my shop here in Houston 1.17 hours for a standard brake job x $90.00 per hour.

bmw have 5 years 50000 mileage warranty on all brakes, pads and those other little ****ts that makes every car whine and squeech. BMW forsure woulda been better.

The dealer replaced my front pads and rotors under warranty the first time they needed to be replaced. It was around 35,000 Km.

A ton of people were complaining about the G35s super strong brakes. They were touchy and quickly wore out. As a result, Nissan introduced a less performance oriented set on the remodel. The brakes lasted longer but had less aggressive stopping distance.

its up to you what you value more...I am very happy with the stopping distance of my brakes. I have Hawk ceramic pads on my 05 G35x rotors which produce 0 dust and 0 problems.

That's about what the dealer charged for the front brake job. I got mine for free because of the special warranty for 03-04. The rotors are able to be resurface only once (depend on the thickness). My next brake job, I'll definitely get aftermarket rotors and pads and I'll either do it myself or take it to my mechanic. It is much cheaper than dealers.

As for BMW, their brakes wear out about the same rate as our car. Basically, if you want good performance, you have to pay for it. My buddy 2001 325i changed the pads/rotors twice within the 4yr/50k warranty. The service is free but his 325i cost more than my 2004 fully loaded 6mt when new.

Wasn't the 03/04 3yr36k brake warranty also good on the 05 "X" since it used the same brakes? It sucks either way since you had it done 1k too late.

$500-600 sounds about right if you're using OEM parts and the dealer. With $70 in basic hand tools, you could do it yourself with better and cheaper Brembo blank rotors ($55/ea) and OEM pads ($50 set) and do the entire job including your new tools for about $230 and 1 hour of your time. I can swap out the pads in 2 minutes once the wheel is off. One 14mm bolt and the pads are out. Doing brakes on these cars and most any import is extremely easy.

one 14mm bolt to swap the brakes, but if your installing new brakes on non-resurfaced rotors your asking for brake pedal pulsation. so you still need to take the other two bolts out and remove your caliper to slide off your rotor. i am a mechanic outside of fresno, CA and we charge 140.00 to r/r your front brakes, resurface your rotors (if they are thick enough) and install wagner thermoquiet brake pads. if rotors are needed they are 50-100 each depending on the car. but i live in a small town of 17000 people and i think i own 1 of 3 g35 sedans in the town.

he was just talking about the pads.

I just sand the rotors down with some light grit sandpaper. the bedding in procedure should take care of the rest

Sounds about right. Your mileage is higher than average and service has a price. BMWs are good cars too, buy what you like.

I've never once gotten brake pulsation after swapping about 15+ sets of pads on my G35, my wife's 98 Legacy GT, and my old 96 Maxima. I only swap out rotors when they're either warped or worn out of spec. I NEVER have the rotors resurfaced.

And why install Wagner thermoquiet pads? The stock pads are plenty quiet plus they bite hard and give the G pretty impressive street brake performance. Even better is they're extremely cheap for a performance pad.
