Clicking sound from engine bay after I shift & ...

Hey guys,
I need your help once again. I searched but could not find anything about
my specific problem. When I shift the auto trans to drive and apply gas quickly, I hear a click from the engine bay. This also happens in reverse. Sometimes, I do not even have to apply the gas but as soon as I shift to reverse or drive and let go of the gas quickly, it will click!

I am going to bring it into the delaer but honestly, I think they are incompetent & may do more harm than fix the problem. I say this based on my experience with them.

Any info will be much appreciated!

Regards,
Eric

Are you perhaps taking about the ABS self test? When you first start the car, shift into Drive and accelerate, when you get to 10 mph the ABS system does a pressure check that sounds like a "click" from the engine compartment. The following paragraph is from the FX35 manual, but its the same thing in the G35.

Hey there!

Interesting Gixxersteve! I hope this is it.

I am hoping others would comment if they have had the same thing occur.
The click sound seem to get noisier though. It wasn't as loud before,
now the click sound is loud enough to make people around the car notice. Just annoying...

BTW, what size is your gixxer? They're so much fun to ride!

If the click only happens once when you first start out, then I would bet its the ABS self test. If it happens more than once during your drive, its something else...get it checked.

As for the gixxer, unfortunately I sold it when I got my FX35. It was a 750. I wasn't riding it much anymore because I was too busy with work, and I used the money toward getting the FX, which is fun and I use it every day. I hope to get another bike in the future.

Eric, I am starting to notice this clicking annoyance on my G as well. This click is far different from the ABS self-test noise after driving out 10mph. Just like yours the click happens when I shift to reverse or drive before applying gas. I haven't really diagnosed this occurrence but if someone else knows the source of the noise and if it's considered normal behavior or not, I'd like to know as well.

Maybe the brake pads are loose, are you running OEM pads?

Sometimes aftermarket pads don't fit snug into the caliper and as a result, they click when moving.

I'm running aftermarket pads, and the clicking noise has always occurred ever since I got the car last year.

update

Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies. An update on the "click". It actually clicks as soon as
I shift to drive also. Never heard it before since my radio is always on. I had the window down & radio off this morning and as soon as I shifted (foot still on brake pedal), I heard the click. Then, I think it clicks again if I step on the gas abruptly. I don't think it is the ABS doing the self check. If it is, it is
too annoying and sounds like something is gonna fall apart.
I am running stock pads on mine.

Gixxersteve, too bad you had to let the 750 go. I ride a Honda twin myself and the wife rides a 600RR. I can't seem to let it go and I hope I do not have to sell one day and just keep riding till I am old...

How long is the delay from when you put it in gear and push on the gas?

I would guess almost instantly (less than a sec)as soon as I nail the gas...or sometimes after I put in drive with foot on brakes it would click.

Hey I had this exact same problem, just got it fixed 3 hours ago!!! It's a quick and sharp click as soon as you shift, as you depress the brake pedal before you even hit the gas, mostly on reverse. It's your rear axle, all the guy did was take wheels off, and with an impact wrench tighten up the axle and it's gone. According to him there is a factory recall bulletin on it, and it's fixed for free, warranty or not. Take it in!!

Have the same problem. Dealer ordered the parts 3 weeks ago. Took the car in this morning and still waiting for them to finish it up. The service guy wasn't very open about the problem, just said "we'll take care of it". I think they're replacing the axles. Interesting to learn som many others have this same issue. My car's an '05 with 42k miles.

Now that you guys mentioned the rear axle, I remember that I've seen this before!! Over on infinitifx.org there was a discussion about the same type of clicking issue with the FX. Here was the diagnosis:

Tech knew exactly what it was: Dry Axles (rear)
They mentioned there's a TSB for it. They basically removed axles and lubed with some grease. Tick Tick all gone

Gotta love the warranty work

Well guys, went out again and tried to put it on drive and reverse and drive
and reverse again- this time I had my head sticking out of the window. The clicking sound seems to be coming from the rear of the car. I am going to bring the car in next week. Hopefully they can diagnose and fix the problem but it sounds like it is perhaps the axle. Will advise later next week of the outcome.

Regards,
Eric
