Fuel gauge

I have noticed on my 2003 G35 sedan that the fuel gauge needle never goes above the full. Have you guys have the same experience?
I even filled at least a gallon more after the auto shut off of the gas pump but the needle was still a notch or so below the full mark, strange, I can fill about almost 16 gallons when almost empty. On my Acura Legend I completely filled it up the needle was way above the full and it would take a good 50-60 miles before it even lowers to the full mark.

Any comment.? thanks!!

Re: Fuel gauge

Never noticed, but it will be a long time before I fill up again (don't drive it much these days in the winter).

I would say that you should just learn the new system and work with it. Isn't that how it's supposed to be anyhow? I mean, how can you have a tank full at 110%? It should never go above 100%. Infiniti just did it right!

Re: Fuel gauge

It’s been discussed before, try here and here for some previous conversations. Mine’s like that too and I still haven’t gotten it fixed. Please let us know if you do!

Re: Fuel gauge

Thanks for the links. I feel much better knowing that it is just not me and seems a common thing although nothing serious.
I checked there is a recal on my brake lamp switch and so I will ask for the fuel gauge too when I get that done.
Although my feeling is that they will try to get out of it as posted by a couple of other folks

Re: Fuel gauge

No problem, keep us up to date on the fix. I meant to mention it last time, but it just slipped my mind. Good luck!

Re: Fuel gauge

Update on the fuel gauge, I noticed the same thing as some other have noted in the links above.
I filled the gas a little below with 1/2 left in the tank and by magic the needle ends up going above the full mark in this case. I will next time try to see if I fill it up from empty if it starts to see the same problem.

Re: Fuel gauge

I've noticed the same thing. When I mentioned it to the dealer they said it was OK.. They said you have to look at the guage while level with it. If you do this the needle does line up with the full line. Of course, my comment was, why didn't I have to do this before? It used to line up while I was in the normal seating position!
I think the gas guage in this car is very inaccurate. It also seems to move at different rates depending on how full the tank is. Also I bet the widely varying mileage people report is due to differences between what the Nav mpg is showing vs. what people actually calculate based on gallons at fill up & miles driven.
Also people have the problem with actually filling up their tank due to the gas pumps cutting off to soon.
This car has a lot of quirks!

Re: Fuel gauge

How about this car has TOO MANY quirks? I've owned many cars and I can tell you that the Honda's I've owned had NO quirks. My parents Lexus...NO quirks. My old BMW...TONS of quirks.

Re: Fuel gauge

Gsg,
I agree with you that the gas needles moves are varrying speed. The needles reaches the half mark with in just around 120miles where as the car may be able to easily run until the low fuel light comes on close to 280miles.

I although not sure if this needle quirk may have any thing to do with the pump gas shutting off too early I think that should not affect the how the needles read gas level

Re: Fuel gauge

iafzal,
You know every cat I have owned had weird things like that with the gauge, in hot weather, it would read full when you first started the car, a few minutes later, it would be down to 3/4, on my last 5 or so vehicles! I do notice if mine reads half, it will barely take 9 gallons, oh well! I think gas pumps suck, sometimes they shut off, and then you can still put like two more gallonbs in, and some, don't shut off at all, that pisses me off

I know a guy with a 2002 Lexus, maybe it's a ES 300, he was bitching the other day that he had to replace the brakes before 20k, and NO, Lexus didn't cover that for him, he was steamed to find that our G's had a 36/36 warranty on brake wear! I'm not saying the car is bad mind you, they are very nice as well! I like my G35, just a couple of minor "quirks" that I will call to their attention when I take it in for my service next week!

Re: Fuel gauge

I also noticed the fuel gauge quirks after I bought my G35 sedan.
As soon as I installed Gordon's 7 wire HyperGrounding Kit, the
quirks disappeared. I can reliably get 150 miles when the needle
is halfway and reliably get 300 miles when the needle reaches
empty. These figures must be adjusted when my foot is heavy!

Re: Fuel gauge

What kind of grounding kit? So its bad grounding that keeps the signal floating and keep the needle from reaching the max?
Although it does reach over the full line if you fill from half ewa

Re: Fuel gauge

I have no idea why GroundingGear™ stabilizes the gas gauge readings. Someone reported that the Nav reading refreshes more frequently as well! Those that report brighter lights, again, the engineers with whom I consult can't really come up with any decent theory behind it! Maybe Hyper-Grounds are the "Asprin" of the automotive world and it'll find other fringe benefits in the future!
