G35 Ergonomically Challenged
G35 Ergonomically Challenged
I am new to the forum. I purchased my G35x last month. It has about 1700 miles on it.
I have read the posts about the seats. I am average size. 5'11" 200lbs. I too drove the car and decided to buy. However, in a long trip, 200-300 miles, the seats will kill you. When I relax after a long trip I can still feel the impression of the seat on my thigh.
I haven't driven any other G35's. But the X seems to have a large bump on the driver side of the transmission tunnel. Again, not a big deal on short trips. But it is very uncomfortable on long drives.
Finally, I feel the interior is ergonomically challenged. It looks like a right hand drive car had only the steering wheel switched. In other words, control placement, such as temp, volume and NAV seem better suited to the passenger.
There are many positives to the car. AWD, the engine, the NAV and did I mention the engine? I just feel it is a "town car". Better suited to short trips, twisty roads and such. It is not a road beast.
I have had many new cars since 1977. This is the only one I have ever felt I made a mistake on.
I don't want to get flamed. I know most people in the forum love their cars. I just think for my application, I may have chosen the wrong vehicle.

Re: G35 Ergonomically Challenged
You're dead on about the right-hand-drive control placement.
However, I find the car great on road trips, as well. The seats are not a problem for myself or my wife.

Re: G35 Ergonomically Challenged
I hear what you are saying, their are compromises in the car, when a car is such a good value...
What else would you buy?
That's where I was at... I liked the Acura TSX a lot, but too slow and boring compared to G35, didn't really like BMW so much even though I like a 95 325i I had a few years back...
Acura TL, sweet car, too expensive and FWD...

Re: G35 Ergonomically Challenged
I initially had some seat comfort problems too. Either the seats got broken in eventually or I got used to them, but I regularly drive several hundred miles a day, the seats are fine for me. One thing I did do early on was to push on the right side seat framework as hard as I could toward the center console in an attempt to bend it. It seemed to help.

Re: G35 Ergonomically Challenged
I have yet to find a problem with the seat comfort, but then again, my trips are usually under 20 mins. Still I totally agree about the dash controls. Definately not the best design, but I'm willing to put up with it. I do, however, love the radio controls on the steering wheel. I've never driven a car with this feature, and I don't think I can ever go back.

I'm with you here, no comfort problems what so ever, I have had vehicles before with uncomfortable seats, and believe me, they were an issue even in a 20 minute drive, and yeah, maybe some things were strange to begin with, but like any new car, you get used to where they are and how they work, and the steering wheel controls are great! It would be very strange to drive a car without those now!
