It should be every 2 years or 30K miles, whichever comes first.

i changed mine at about 55K kms, along w/ the diff. you should change these fluids during the 40k service. you don't have to get it done at the dealer. they charge far too much $$ for these simple procedures. a quick-lube shop can do it for 1/2 price using synthetic fluids.

Your timing is a bit off I think. 40k miles is closest to 37,500mi service, which is just an oil change :-) If it's a car you just got used then might as well play it safe and change the tranny fluid. Otherwise I'd wait for 60k.

According to the maintenance schedule, AT fluid doesn't need changing until at least 60K miles. http://x.infinitihelp.com/maintenance/

Only use Nissan Matic J AT fluid.

Manuals don't have transmission fluid, they have very thick oil... you should inspect/replace your transmission oil every 30K.

Duh!! I don't know what I was thinking. Brain fart. Don't use J Matic fluid in your 6MT.

The 6MT requires GL-4 gear lube.

^ i believe the requirement is to use either Nissan tranny fluid or a compatible alternative. i.e. a GL-4 type lubricant that meets or exceeds the applicable standards. it doesn't have to be exclusively Nissan lube though.

there are several other good GL-4's on the market that will work in addition to Nissan MT lube.

I didn't do my own research when I made the above post and corrected it. What I read was out of context and was a statement that using any MT oil other than Nissan would void the warranty. The statement really says the dealers will only be reimbursed for Nissan MT oil when doing warranty work.

2001-2004 ALL NISSAN: MANUAL TRANSMISSION OIL
REQUIRED FOR WARRANTY REPAIRS

Applied vehicles: 2001-2003 All Models Equipped with Manual Transmission
2004 Maxima (A34) - All Models Equipped with Manual Transmission

Service Information

If an Applied Vehicle eqiupped with Manual Transmission needs servicing for warranty repairs, Nissan Manual Transmission Fluid (MTF) HQ Multi 75W-85 oil
(P/N 999MP-MTF00P) is required.

Important Note: Nissan MTF HQ Multi 75W-85 oil must be used when performing manual transmission repairs paid by Nissan. These include warranty, service contact, or goodwill repairs. Nissan will not reimburse dealers for manual transmission repairs when Nissan MTF HQ Multi 75W-85 oil is not used.

If a manual transmission requires the oil be drained for maintenance or repair (customer pay work), 75W-85 oil is required as the service fill fluid.

Nissan recommends use of MTF HQ Multi 75W-85 oil, which optimizes shift quality, for customer pay use as well.
