Spoiler install...help requested
Hi all,
Need some help/advice from those who've done this before...
Received my aftermarket spoiler from infinitiparts.net, beautiful piece, but....although I'm pretty handy, I do not want to take the chance of damaging my G in anyway at all. There were no instructions included.
On the attached pic, I received:
2 foam pads, (1)
5 cardboard strips with holes surrounded by adhesive (2)
2 clips, to join wires I believe (3)
4 allen head screws (4)
2 black plactic caps (5)
and not shown, the spoiler and 2 templates.
Here are a few of my assumptions:
- I drill 5 holes in the trunklid, 4 screws, 1 wire pass through. At point B, it appears a simple drill through (a flat part of the trunk) then secure screw to spolier.
- However at point A, it appears that I have to drill through the trunklid, then from the other side (inside), drill an additional hole through the hollow part of the trunk support structure for access.
A few questions:
- For the electrical, point C, do I snip off the connector and use the clips provided to splice this wire to the spoiler's wire?
- Does the adhesive side of the foam pads attach to the underside of the spoiler?
- Should I use some sort of sealer to protect against water and rust around the holes I drill? Silicone, grease, ...?
- What size drill bit do I use for the holes in the trunklid?
- What size drill bit do I use for the access hole on the inside of the trunk, assuming that I assumed correctly above?
- Am I forgeting anything?
- Am I missing any parts?
I've already identified the connector for the third brake light for disconnection.
Any help will be appreciated....thanks.

Re: Spoiler install...help requested
Well having already done this. :-)
Here are a few of my assumptions:
- I drill 5 holes in the trunklid, 4 screws, 1 wire pass through.
CORRECT!
At point B, it appears a simple drill through (a flat part of the trunk) then secure screw to spolier.
CORRECT!
- However at point A, it appears that I have to drill through the trunklid, then from the other side (inside), drill an additional hole through the hollow part of the trunk support structure for access.
AGAIN CORRECT! YOU HAVE TO DRILL A BIG ENOUGH HOLE FOR THE HEAD OF THE SCREW TO FIT THOUGH. YOU NOTE THAT YOU GOT TWO BLACK PLASTIC CAPS THAT FIT INTO THESE HOLES AFTER YOU ARE DONE SO THAT IT LOOKS NICE.
A few questions:
- For the electrical, point C, do I snip off the connector and use the clips provided to splice this wire to the spoiler's wire?
NO THESE MAKE IT SIMPLE. ONE SIDE OF THE CONNECTOR SLIDES OVER THE EXISTING TAILIGHT WIRE AND THEN YOU TAKE THE WIRE FROM THE SPOILER AND SLIDE IT INTO THE CONNECTOR UNTIL IT STOPS. THEN CRIMP THE CONNECTOR CLOSE. THE METAL CLIP PUNCTURES THE TWO WIRES AS IT SLIDES DOWN.
- Does the adhesive side of the foam pads attach to the underside of the spoiler?
CORRECT!
- Should I use some sort of sealer to protect against water and rust around the holes I drill? Silicone, grease, ...?
A LITTLE TOUCH UP PAINT IS ALL YOU NEED.
- What size drill bit do I use for the holes in the trunklid?
DON'T REMEMBER BUT THE SAME SIZE AS THE SCREW THREAD.
- What size drill bit do I use for the access hole on the inside of the trunk, assuming that I assumed correctly above?
THE SAME SIZE AS THE HEAD OF THE SCREW.
- Am I forgeting anything?
NO JUST BE VERY CAREFULE TO MAKE SURE THE HOLES ALL LINE UP CORRECTLY. MEASURE AND REMEASURE. ALSO LAY DOWN A FEW STRIPS OF MASKING TAPE ON TOP OF THE TRUNK BEFORE DRILLING AND FOR MARKING THE HOLES.
- Am I missing any parts?
NOT THAT I CAN SEE.
Have fun!
