2nd replacement 6MT!!!!!!!!

I just got word today that Mission Viejo Infiniti will have to replace my 6MT again. The first time was due to a grind going into 5th gear. This time is due to difficulties getting into 1st and 2nd when the car is cold in the morning. It also has a whine that sounds like it may be coming from the throw out bearing. But at this point Infiniti will only warranty repair the trans and the clutch plate. Not the pressure plate nor the throw out bearing even though the tech says he thinks that the whinning is coming from the throw out bearing. Infiniti Mission Viejo wants me to pay for the pressure plate and throw out bearing. They will warranty repair the clutch plate and transmission. The fight is not over, when I get done they will be paying for everything. I was told by someone there at the dealer because I didn't get my regular service done with Mission Viejo Infiniti they didn't feel they owed it to me to get the throw out bearing and pressure plate taken care under warranty. BS they will pay.

While the trans is out though I'm going to replace the flywheel, any suggestions? Who makes the lightest and best engineered?

Thanks.

They're seriously replacing your tranny due to slow 1-2 shifts on cold mornings? Mine grinds occasionally, but I haven't shown the dealer since I doubt I could reproduce it. How long did tranny #2 last you?

I'm not familiar with the JWT flywheel. Where can I get some info about it?

Thanks.

Re: 2nd replacement 6MT!!!!!!!!

Since day one after they replaced the original transmission I have had problems with the 1-2 shifts and the whinning in tranny #2. At first the dealer said that the new transmission needed to be broken in. What a bunch of Bull, but I played along. Well it has been about 5K miles since the original was replaced so now they feel that the replacement transmission is bad again. I have read other post of when the 6MT is replaced that some times the shifting is tough and that the shift gate or something doesn't line up and needs adjustments. The part that really gets me is that the tech at the dealer feels that the whinning is coming from the throw out bearing and he even told the tech line and they still won't replace it because I haven't brought my car to them for normal scheduled maintanence. I should report them to Consumer Affairs or just confront the service manager, he is the one who can make decisions if they will cover a repair of this type.

I would definitly take your car in to have them try and reproduce the grind in your tranny. They told me that the first tranny was grinding going into 5th because I was skipping shifts from 2nd to 5th. And then said that they would replace the tranny #1 as a act of "Good Faith". I admit that when I first got the car I did shift from 2nd to 5th probably 6 to 8 times but then you get use to the close shifts and it doesn't happen anymore. The thing I don't understand is why wouldn't down shifting from say 4th to 2nd to slow the car down effect the tranny the same way. Different revs on the engine/tranny just going the opposite way. BTW I did get the dealer to take that comment of an act of "Good Faith" off my record for tranny #1 and show it as a warranty repair.

Re: 2nd replacement 6MT!!!!!!!!

Do a search here, FA, and especially my350z on flywheels. Basically you have a few choices for lightened flywheels. The ones I know of are Nismo, Jim Wolf Technology, and the Tilton. But beware, the lighter flywheel you get the less streetable it is as you can't be as lazy during shifts. I believe the stock flywheel is about 31 lbs. where the Tilton is only 8 lbs. Obviously the Tilton isn't for your daily driver. The Nismo and JWT are more of a compromise between better acceleration and streetability. Another thing you have to consider with the lighter flywheels is that they make more noise. I suggest you do a lot of research before deciding on a lightened flywheel.

Re: 2nd replacement 6MT!!!!!!!!

I posted a few weeks back about grinding from 1-2 shifts when the car was cold. Took it into the dealer and they supposedly discovered that the factory underfilled the transmission. They replaced the transmission fluid and of course "checks OK" was their result.

The problem persists 3 weeks later, so I am bringing it back to them on Monday. This will be second service for the problem. In MIchigan they get 4 attempts to correct within 24 months, or I can claim it under the Lemon Law. I just hope they get it right the next trip in.

Re: 2nd replacement 6MT!!!!!!!!

I'm glad I came across this post. I have a 2004 G35x. It has been in the shop for five days now concerning the transmission. The G35x only comes in an automatic transmission so I do a lot of driving in the manumatic mode. When I down shift to 2nd gear it slams into gear making a noise that doesn't sound good and the car jumps. I've had problems with my windshield wipers, radio, suspension and now the transmission. I called Infiniti today asking about the Lemon Law. They were contacting the dealership to confirm my story. I would think a 2 1/2 month old car with all of these problems might fall under the law.
Any advice on how I should pursue this?

What do you guys mean the lightend flywheel makes more noise? What kind of noise and is it bad for the tranny or engine or jsut something that happens when you put on the flywheel?

Re: 2nd replacement 6MT!!!!!!!!

I've heard the comment that the jwt flywheel "feels like sand is in my gearbox" at any rpm lower than 3000. The light flywheels can't be damped as well as the OEM, so there's oscillation noises. I have enough problems quick shifting as is with this gearbox, I'd rather not have a light flywheel force me to do it every shift.

I guess I'll just have to be more agressive w/ my dealer about replacing this tranny. What's it warrantied to, 32,000 miles?

Re: 2nd replacement 6MT!!!!!!!!

Yup, the stock flywheel is a dual mass one. That means it is two pieces with some rubber in the middle to absorb the noise and some vibration, thus making it a heavy piece around 30 lbs. All the aftermarket lightened flywheels are a one piece and do not have the rubber to supress noises thus making them noiser during operation. The noise is normal and not harmful, just something one would have to live with if they got a lightened flywheel. From what I've read the Nismo flywheel, since it's only about 7 lbs lighter than the stock, makes the least noise and is the easiest to drive with out of all the light flywheels. So it's a tradeoff you have to think about, more noise and less streetability for faster acceleration and better downshifting. I implore you to do research over on my350z.com. They have more information than I have given here.

Re: 2nd replacement 6MT!!!!!!!!

Thanks guys. I do some SCCA stuff but you really don't do alot of shifting in SCCA Solo 2 stuff. I think I may stick with the OEM flywheel. I went to my350z.com and you're right there is some real good info there about the aftermarket flywheels. Hopefully this time they will get the tranny right and I won't have to deal with this problem again.

Re: 2nd replacement 6MT!!!!!!!!

Yup, if you mostly do Solo 2 events then there really is no absolute need for a lightened flywheel. You might gain a small fraction of a second off the launch depending on how the autox course is setup but I don't see a whole lot of benefit of a lightened flywheel for autox. Plus your mostly in 2nd gear during the runs anyway so shifting isn't something you really have to worry about. Lightened flywheels would definitely shine more on the 1320 or Road Racing.
