Burning rubber smell inside and out

Hi guys, my 2005 G35 sedan with 27K is starting to produce a slight burning rubber smell after driving for about 10 minutes. The smell comes inside the cabin when the heat is on. At first I thought it was my OEM winter rubber floor mats just getting too hot from the floor vents, but i dont think that is the case because I can smell it coming from the dash vents. Recently since I have been using my heat more often, I have had a squeeky ticking sound coming from the belts and pulley area under the hood. Today I noticed the sound is now a small squeek coming from one of the pulleys/belts. I also can smell the same burning rubber I smell in the cabin near the belts which leads me to believe that is where the smell is coming from. I hope this is just a case of the belts needing to be tightened and not something else. Ive read that our belts need to be tightened every so often. Would the belts produce a burning smell if they were too loose? i would assume so. I couldnt find anything relating to this problem in the TSBs for 2005 models. I want to see if anyone had a similar problem or know what I could do before I bring it into the dealer.

i don't know if it's the belt, but i had a similar rubber burning smell come from my car when i first bought it and it turned out to be the new tires they put on. When they put new tires on, it causes a slight burning rubber smell for the first few weeks until they wear a little.

I have that same smell. Only happens occasionally when it's cold and snowy out, and especially more noticeable when VDC's been at work on the snowy roads... Anyway, I took it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong.

Rubber smell

I have the same smell happen occaisionally on my 06 sedan. I only notice it in the winter months, and I have only noticed it since installing new rubber floor mats so I suspect the heater on the mats as well.

hmm...well then maybe the burning smell is normal and unrelated to the noises I have. I do have about 1000 miles onto my new snow tires but I never heard of burning smells unless you are driving them hard. I guess it is just the floor mats then like I had originally thought.

I did some testing with trying to locate where the small squeeking/ticking noise is coming from when the car is idle. You cannot notice the noise from inside the car, only when standing outside in front of the car. I think its coming from the A/C compressor because it seems when I turn on the windshield defroster or Auto climate control (both turn on A/C) it amplifies the sound outside. But if I shut off the A/C by pushing the A/C button the noise goes away. Does anyone know if our A/C compressors are normally this noisy? Could it be as simple as a loose/off center belt? Im going to schedule some time with the dealer.

I have the same smell; it's winter here also. I thought it was because one of my tires was low; but the smell persists. It could also be because I drift every damn corner that has snow on it

Do you notice the smell after light or hard driving? I wouldn't think it was the belts making the smell. Maybe a plastic bag got caught somewhere near that area and is melting, making that smell.

Personally, I noticed a burning smell everytime I pushed the car really hard. It turned out to be my tranny oil. I had the dealer drop the tranny pan, clean everything out and replace the oil, and all is well now.

I get the smell regardless of driving light or hard. It usually comes into the car when I am stopped or parked after a few minutes with the engine running and the heat is on, but goes away once I start driving. Transmission was flushed less than 1000 miles ago. I will check for any plastic bags but I think they make a different smell than rubber does.

Does anyone know if the VDC uses the brakes to monitor power. I get the smell in my 06 X when the VDC has been working a lot.

from what i read VDC can produce a burning rubber smell when it is working. But for me the burning rubber smell comes in anytime, even when VDC never kicks on or driving hard.

I have the same thing. Only when its cold outside and heat was on for a while. Its worse when its snowing or raining outside. It might be the belts, but the smell is concentrated on the drivers side of the motor towards the fire wall so who knows. I notice it more when my wipers are on and have no clue why.

well its at the dealer now and of course the noise wasnt being produced when i drove it in. Hopefully the dealer can figure it out, i probably should have mentioned the burning rubber smell but it seems to be the norm in these cars. 06X loaner though!
