Re: G35x RPM Question

Yes, 3000 RPM = 80 mph. I've not tried to top out the 5th gear yet - need to find a track. Believe that top mph is limited to 150 mph. There was a previous post with a picture of the dashboard of the G35 with mph at 140 mph and the tach was reading 6000 RPM - anyone remember seeing this somewhere. Of course, I thought it was pretty crazy for someone to snap a picture of the dashboard while the car was whizzing at 140 mph unless it was getting dyno'd.

With regards to the shaking - hopefully it was just the tires because that's easy to fix.

Re: G35x RPM Question

I think proper breakin doesn't limit you on how fast you go (MPH), proper breakin limits how fast you go fast (RPM). I still haven't gone over 4000rpm. I think I'm suppose follow this for the first 3500 miles then after my first oil change I can go to normal use. I'm a firm believer that you should just drive the car hard from the very start, so I'm just going to follow the limits for the first 1000 miles. I heard both pros and cons to following the breakin limits.

As far as that guy who took a picture of his speedometer at 150mph, what a nut!!!

Re: G35x RPM Question

My car was shaking took a couple of trips back to the dealer. They ended up changing all 4 tires and the shake went away.

Is it a slight vibration almost like you are running on a rough surface? That's what mine felt like

The sedan most certainly IS a high performance car. Don't let the versatility fool you.

Re: G35x RPM Question

Mine is a slight vibration also but feels like it might have something to do with the AWD.

Some people consider a Honda Civic Sedan V-Tec Motor a high performance Vehicle, whatever. I tie High Performance to a Sport Car or anything over 300 hp.

Its pretty easy to photoshop a set of guages. Don't believe everything you see.

Re: G35x RPM Question

AWDriver,

As noted by others, ~3K rpm and 80mph is about right (my 5AT sits at 2750rpm @ 75mph). Do the math and 6K rpm is 160mph, but the speed is governed to 155mph.

The vibration is almost surely tires. Probably a poor job of balancing at the factory. I'd make the dealership rebalance the tires. If that does not fix it, then ask for new tires (and maybe wheels, as they could be bad).

It is slightly possible that the vibration is due to front end alignment/suspension problems/looseness. This would be quite a bit more serious...

The dealership should not hesitate to fix these problems as 90mph is not excessive (EASY to hit when passing in the G35) and you really don't want any vibrations (that are not road related) at that speed. Speaking of road related vibrations does this occur on all roads (that you can get to 90mph on)?

Re: G35x RPM Question

What does the * next to Mini and Hummer mean? No data for the 3/5 yr or they weren't around... I don't think Mini has been around but Hummer was... so just curious?

Re: G35x RPM Question

No the speed is governed to 145 not 155... which doesn't matter to me because I for one would never get anywhere near that.... man I can't imagine getting bagged doing those kinds of speeds... you would really be hosed that's for sure.

I have had this car going near 100 and that was plenty for me

Re: G35x RPM Question

Thanks Scott for the advise. Whenever I hit 90 or above I feel a slight vibration, hear a slight humming. It doesn't matter what road.

Does anybody else think that the G35 revs too high. This is constituting to our bad gas mileage.

Re: G35x RPM Question

No why are you so into how many rpms at 80... I owned a Ford Probe GT that ran 4K rpms at 80mph and it got better mileage than my G35...

You know these cars a pretty fast... the laws of physics say you don't go fast for free. I am only getting 18mpg but at every red light if I am first in line the cars next to and behind fall away rapidly as I accelerate... I love the effortless acceleration of this engine.. I may have to go out and give it a hug right now

Re: G35x RPM Question

alderran,
I think a better question is, 'Why aren't you concerned about the high RPM?'. I don't feel safe when the engine is working so hard when I cruising at 80mph, it's an unsafe feeling for me. I've had many cars in my life (mostly sport cars) and it always concerns me when my car revs so high when I'm just cruising. I'm sure I'll get use to it just like I did with my M3 but it's just my topic of concern.

Also fast is relative...A 17 year old kid will think a 16 second truck is fast but a person who owns a 12 second Z06 will probably think of a G35 as a good everyday, family, 4 door sedan. This is how I think of the G35 a great 4 door AWD Sedan. I don't think I'm going to race anyone in it, that's what my other car is for.

Re: G35x RPM Question

Please 0-60 in under 6 seconds is fast... it may not be a ferrari but get real most of the cars out there on the road are going to get their doors blown off by a G35.

Obviously Infiniti was more worried about performance vs gas mileage. If you are interested in great gas mileage then you buy a Prius... why would you buy a G35 and then start worrying about gas mileage? The car is not targeted at that market.

I wanted performance IMOP that's what I got

Re: G35x RPM Question

3,000 RPM at 80mph does NOT seem all that high to me. My Sentra SE-R turned 4,000 at 80, and my SVT Contour does about 3,250. Unless you're driving a Buick, or a sport-ute with a big, mega-torque engine, or perhaps a Vette with its ridiculously high 6th gear, 25-30MPH/1,000 RPM is pretty reasonable. You get the ability to use 6th (in a MT) down to 35-40MPH or so without lugging the engine, and you maintain reasonably close gear ratios for peak acceleration. If you use a super-tall top gear, you sacrifice the ability to use it on secondary roads, the ratio spread from 5th to 6th gets to be a bit much, and you'll have a hard time maintaining speed on any kind of substantial grade in 6th gear. If you make 5th taller to compensate you start affecting the ratio spread between the lower gears, probably to the detriment of performance.

Just my $.02.
