6MT drivers with long commutes

Looking hard at a great deal on G35, but I live in ATL with a 50 min commute (stop and go)

Wanted to know how you long commuters do with the 6MT

I used to do 55 miles distance between my old work place and my old apartment when I had my Z...

in traffic, leave a lot of space infront of you, so you can just roll in neutral...

Doesn't bother me. After a while, it just becomes 2nd nature to you, and you don't even think about it.

Don't be a whiner about driving a 6MT in traffic. If you're concerned about it, get an AT.

If I had that long of a drive I would get a 5AT.

If u have second thoughts about being in traffic with 6MT then don't get it. I did it for 8 months and did not mind at all. As someone mentioned it becomes 2nd nature and u don't even think about it.

while my commute isn't very long (~20mins), it can be stop-&-go. occasionally the 6mt can be a pain, but overall i find it keeps me more alert to the traffic around me, which is a good thing. besides, when you do get a chance to have some fun with the G, the 6mt is the only way to go, hands down.

I drive 40 minutes every other day to school, about 3/4 highway and I still love it. I remember back when I was debating

b/w AT and MT, and Im damn glad I went with the 6MT.

I can understand why you would not want a 6MT but come on, who wouldnt want to play around with 6MT. I see this one BMW(Dont start saying things please) making the best of it on the way to school. He looks like he even has fun in traffic. You can do so much more with a 6MT than a 5AT.

I commute in Atlanta and traffic is very terrible. I go from Marietta to Norcross(25 miles) for work in my '06 6mt all the time. The commute varies from 30 min to 1.5 hrs depending on what horrible hours I'm willing to put up with. I don't notice the manual thing all that much but I do tend to road rage a lot. Last car was a manual as well and I was covering over 25k a year for a while.

I understand that earlier 6spd's had much heavier clutches though so that may influence your decision.

I lived in Atlanta back in 2006 and there's no way I could find myself driving a manual in that town. All the hills and crawling traffic would be a huge annoyance with the 6MT especially with the on/off nature of the clutch. My foot got tried driving my auto My commute was 11 miles from Alpharetta to GA400/I285 (Sandy Springs exit) and it took me 45-90 minutes dependent on time of day. It didn't matter if I took the highway or side streets, it was the same. I don't know how anyone could stand living in that town for the long term if you had an 8-5 job. I've found the traffic in LA to be far easier to handle than ATL.

I don't have a 6MT, but my car is a 5-spd that i commute in. Even has a cable-actuated clutch (no hydraulic here) so it's a little stiffer. I drive 50 miles total to commute to work in stop and go traffic and don't have a prob with it. You just get used to it and it's second nature. Rolling in nuetral down hills helps a lot

All I've ever owned are manual cars so I guess I'm just used to it, but I drive about an hour each way through backroads and lots of traffic lights. It's not exactly stop-and-go traffic but it's definitely not continuous driving. For me, the fun of having a manual is worth the trade-off of being stuck in traffic.

Atlanta is a bit strange because the traffic is everywhere. A lot of people live there, but the city is sprawled out. The traffic problem is caused by the lack of infrastructure and city planning. Basically the city governments wanted ATL to grow fast and they let the builders run mad without any regards for street planning and load. The other problem is there isn't a straight road in the town. All the roads meander and have blind corners and hills. It's really quite beautiful, but doesn't lend well to handling large amounts of traffic. When commuting between 630am and 830am and 400pm and 700pm, you'll be stuck in these areas crawling at 1mph or less in a line 1/4 mile long dealing with a stop sign or stoplight. It's really annoying, especially when you have to face 4 to 8 of these things on your way to and from work. It's crawling like that would be hell with a manual, especially when crawling up a 4%+ grade.
