advice on which year/tran g35 to purchase

im currently looking into buy a g35 sedan, my price range can only afford bout the 03 - 06 models with 30-40k miles, now i was looking around and can only find one g35 thats a manual, i was about to settle for a autostick but i heard that the 03 manumatic is only a top gear selector, so now im looking at 04 +, and im looking into the 04 manual but it just a year shy of the revup, any suggestions? i like autosticks but i dont want to loose any power to compared to a 6MT, i was planning on using my G for more recreational use rather than communting

In my opinion I'd stay with an 03-06 auto or an 04 manual. I've read here that the 05-06 motors have a oil consumption problem,, (not all but some do) Also manual transmission reliability comes into question with few on here having to replace them, sometimes twice. Now, since you say its for recreational purposes,, I'm assuming you have a second car and well can probably afford any reliablity issues with one of those 05-06 manual cars and be on top of the horsepower chain related to this 1st gen car.

if you want a manual i would go with an 03-04 MT. Some 05-06 MT's have oil consumption problems due to the rev-up engine. I think both the 03-04 ATs use top gear selectors, not just the 03s. The 05-06 AT manumatics have downshift rev-matching. 05+ has updated interior and minor cosmetic changes.

Also the ATs are pretty solid. Some people have had problems with syncros on their MTs. The MTs should theoretically be faster due to less weight, and less HP loss, but it most importantly depends on the driver.

The auto trannies in the G sedan are pretty bulletproof and definitely hold their own. As far as Japanese imports go, I'm very happy with the automatics in the G35.
