03 yellowed/cracked headlights

Hey all,

Just got back from driving 9 hours in my NEW 03.5 G35S, and LOVE it!!! Wow do I love it.

Anyway, just did a search for solving the somewhat common yellowed headlight problem but want to get some other opinions on the fix. The headlights are VERY noticeably yellow with small cracks all over. I searched through a ton of threads but didn't see too much about the small cracks on the headlights. Would like your opinion if you have experience on this...
Should I try some of the self remedies such as the Plastix (sp?) or very fine grit sand paper?
Should I buy some new headlights, if so where should I get them and do you think the JDM/painting the housing black would look good on the Emerald Mist? I'm undecided, I'd like to keep it looking classy.
Should I just try and polish them and then get some light smoked covers for them and call it good?

Any help is appreciated, thanks!!

p.s... I did do a long search for this problem but couldn't find what I needed, maybe because I'm exausted from 20 hours of driving in 2 days If there's a good thread let me know!

Well, since you already know many of the fixes for this type of problem, I'm not sure what you are asking us for. If you want to drop hundreds of dollars on some brand new headlamps to fix the issue, go right ahead. But why not try some of the less expensive/less complex solutions first?? You should first try the plastic polish such as Meguiars Plastix or Mothers Plastic Polish. If that doesn't work after several applications, move onto the very fine grit sandpaper. If that doesn't work, then maybe you might eventually consider replacing the headlamps.

IMO, I think the plastic polish will fix the issue well enough. Good luck.

I use Meguiar's step 1 to remove the yellow haze. Then I shine it up with step 3. I've never noticed any deep scratches.

Honestly, just try the bottled stuff first. No harm in trying. In the time it takes you to read responses you could have applied Plastix or whatever and found out for yourself. Who knows, it might solve all your problems.

Congrats on your new G and welcome to Driver. The yellowish hazing can easily be removed with meguiars plast-x unless its something else. Most wouldn't recommend fine grit sand paper unless you know what you're doing. As for the cracks, I'm guessing its rock chips which you're bumper will be full of it as well. Clear bra and headlight overlays from bluebatmobile. Hope it helps~

Use the Porsche stuff, its used on their rear plastic window on vert cars, works wonders. Realize that you'll have to do this every few months, the main cause of this is road grime getting cooked onto the lense due to the heat of the xenon headlights.

Just get the one's off of ebay for $115 (assuming you don't have Xenon's due to the year of your car). If you don't like them black get color matched spray paing, crack them open, sand them and paint them the same color as your car.

Ummm he said there were cracks in the headlights not just haze. If there was only a haze what you suggested would be fine, but if there are cracks he needs to replace them.

^+1 Cracks = replacement
eBay ones are not that great of quality though. You get what you pay for.

Oh, 03.x also came with Xenons. I have them on my 03.0

Thanks for the help guys. Just got done with about 5 hours of claybar and waxing it, completely detailing inside and so on and got the Plastex and WOW that stuff works wonders! They're definitely not yellow or hazy anymore but I still do have very small spiderweb type cracking, don't even know how to explain it. I think I'm just going to get some lightly tinted covers for them and call it good.
Thanks again!

While we're on the subject, my headlights started dulling and I had some Meguiar's Cleaner Wax laying around. What the hell, I tried it. It worked beautifully. Finished it off with the carnauba wax and it's as clear as crystal.
