Automatic headlights too aggressive

Anyone think the automatic headlights are a little too aggressive in turning off, e.g., turning off when it's not particularly bright outside?

You mean like on a cloudy day? I have had vehicles before with auto lights, and they don't come on either on a cloudy day, or in a storm.

Re: Automatic headlights too aggressive

I agree totally, I was coming home today and went under a small underpass and the auto lights came on and when I got back into the sun about 5 sec's later, the lights never turned off....hmm may have a problem, take Infiniti take a look next time...

Hmmm, mine never come on under an overpass, sometimes the do come on late in the day, or early in the morning, I think the angle of the sun creates a dark shadow, all cars I've owned with auto lights did that.

tlastrange, wait, do you mean they do come on, or don't come on, Steiner's reply got me confused about that.

Re: Automatic headlights too aggressive

They're too aggressive turning off. There are times I'll turn them on manually because I feel it's justified. Maybe I'll try partially covering the light sensor on the dash to see if I can "tune" it.

Of course I'm one of the old-fart-over-35 drivers so in addition to wanting my headlights on more, if I could get my left turn signal to stay on automatically, that would complete the picture :-)

Okay, that's what I thought you meant, doesn't your turn signal already stay on? jk!

Re: Automatic headlights too aggressive

I've considered them too aggressive at coming on sometimes when the sun is low, and behind me,l and the next thing I know I can't see the speedometer because the lights have come on, and the dash lights dimmed.

Doesn't it say something in the owner's manual about not turning the lights off and back on quickly? I stopped using the auto lights ever since I read that.

If you want to "tune" your auto lights, you can get a small Neutral Density filter from your local camera shop to put over the sensor(s). You can also get a swatchbook from a company called Rosco that has samples of filtering material to play with. These are either free or extremely cheap.

Yeah, been there, I just increase the brightness of the instruments when that happens! That filter might be a good idea, then maybe the lights would come on on a cloudy day!

Also, the dealer can adjust the sensitivity of the lights a little bit. It's one of the BCM options you can change.

Other cars I've had with auto lights usually turned the lights on if you're running the windshield wipers.
