$5 Z tube replacement
$5 Z tube replacement
hey guys and gals ive been thinking about this for a week now. I looked at the z-tube and saw it was just a tube that was straight without any of those boxes that the g has. So i went to sears hardwear and went to the dryer duct aisle and found one that was 3" wide just like the z tube. I removed the g tube fitted the dryer duct in place i left those rubber things on. I thighten the screws and turned on the car to see if the check engine light went on. Nothing! So that was the first good news then i took it out for a spin and guess what! You hear that growl at 2.5rpm+. I also must tell you i have a k&n plus i have done the stock air box mod. So i spent $44 dollars for the filter, $5 for the dyer duct, which is a nice silver and wouldnt know what it was just by looking at it, and nothing for the air box mod. So i saved myself from buying the high flow air box from stillen and the z-tube and have 100% percent satisfaction. Any questons pm me. Ill try to put some pics up and no its not a hard mod at all.
Re: mock z tube
Ha! Interesting. That wasn't the flexible duct tubing was it? I'd be interested to know how well that holds up.
As was stated somewhere before the cheapest mod is to remove the tube, airbox and just tape a napkin over the intake! Growwwwwwwlllllll! (tongue in cheek)

Re: mock z tube
no its not that flexible one that one is to flimsy the one i used is stronger and the only thing that can happen is if it gets cut. Then i still have the other half left over to use.

madabs: You are kidding right? Why would put something like that on a $30K car? Can you dry your clothes with it now? LOL

Re: $5 Z tube replacement
He must be talking about *aluminum* flexible dryer duct, not the white plastic stuff! Aluminum flex tubing should hold an air-tight seal just fine. The only down-side I can think of is aluminum tubing will probably get warm after a while, unless it is well-insulated. Might be worth a try...

Re: $5 Z tube replacement
Just remember that corrugated tubing creates turbulence and will slow down laminar air flow. I would not use it. You are probably decreasing the power.

Re: $5 Z tube replacement
it is the aluminum one and what do you mean why would you put that in a 30k car how much do you think the z tube costs to make it is only plastic. I was driving all day and nite with it and it has been working fine. I even raced a corrado and smoked him. Spending double the money for something doesnt always mean its better. I just thought this would help some of you out.
Re: $5 Z tube replacement
It's not necessarily "ghetto"...While the corrugated tubing can cause turbulence, as was pointed out, the rest of the install wasn't a bad idea...I'd want to see a dyno, but why not make your own equipment? A friend of mine with a Subaru Impreza RS and a WRX made his own intakes out of PVC piping and he's feeling a noticeable increase in power and growl...He also used some high gloss, high heat-resistant paint to match the piping to his exterior body color...I'd recommend that to anyone who's going to DIY an intake tube, along with utilizing some dyno time after the install

My thought's eco yours on this. The oem intake is pretty well designed. I just don't see it being outdone that way.
$110 for the popcharger isn't that much to get it right.

Re: $5 Z tube replacement
The Z tube is not that expensive if you get a used one. I guess you are not looking for an OEM look? Have fun with your clothes dryer!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: mock z tube
If you really want to do a "do it yourself intake," the pvc pipe is a good idea because it is smooth and you can make smooth bends with fittings. Plus you can paint it black or buy black pvc. However, my feeling is that for $60, a z-tube is well worth the clean, OEM look.

What did you do with the MAF tube, you are going to drive the ECU nuts and really mess up the Air/Fuel ratio.
