Re: Anyone use syntheic yet..

I used Mobil 1 5W-30 for my first oil change at 3800 miles. I was about to settle on 10W-30 because of the warmer Texas weather, but then went with the recommended 5W-30 after reading about the tighter tolerances used in new engine designs and the fact that you want maximum flow when the engine starts cold.

Can't say that I have noticed any "difference", but then again I have not really expected anything noticeable.

I switched to synthetic as soon as I bought mine used with
16,500 miles. I started with Castrol Syntec but now am
using Mobil1 5W30. Can't tell a lick of difference.

Been unsing Mobil 1 5W30 since the 15K oil change. I have noticed no difference but I do go longer on my changes-4500 to 5000. I also kept with 5W30 as the motor seems really tight. I have 26K now so I have read that I am getting close to the break in point. I have heard other state that at 30K the car seems to gel and just get better in every respect.

I used Mobil 1 5W-30 at 7.5k and 15k oil changes. I will continue using it at 7.5k intervals.

Re: Anyone use syntheic yet..

Got a free oil change from the dealer at 3750, they put in regular stuff. At 7500, I did it myself with Mobil 1 5W30. Not quite up to the 11250 mark yet.. only going to send off for analysis at that point and change the filter. Chinee has been running Mobil 1 for quite awhile and has posted his analysis results.

Re: Anyone use syntheic yet..

to get this straight...does synthetic last longer..so you don't change your oil until 7500 miles vs with regular oil its recommended 3000?

Am I right?

Re: Anyone use syntheic yet..

Yes and no.

Synthetic doesn't break down as fast as dino oil, however, it is dirt that is the enemy and the reason for regular oil changes (assuming that there is no viscosity breakdown).

The reason to switch to synthetic is that it protects better period. There will be less wear and tear on the engine with synthetic oil. IMHO

Re: Anyone use syntheic yet..

You should still change your oil filter at regular intervals. With the really good synthetics, like Amsoil, you could even push it to 15k or more miles between oil changes.. though I wouldn't do it without oil analysis to make sure your engine can take it. However, even those oils have a 1 year max life, so the cost effectiveness tends to only be a bonus for high mileage people.. more useful for commercial vehicles than personal.

Re: Anyone use syntheic yet..

I put Mobil 5w30 in at 1500 miles (asap after the break-in period). And I will change it again at 3000 as the first mobil 1 change is mixed with the residual factory oil. After that I will change it whenever the odo is divisible by 3000.

When I changed the oil the first time I did notice that it was darker than I expected. Actually it was darker than a 3k mile mobile 1 oil change on a 50k mile car. I figure this is due to a couple of things. One it probably contained debris from the manufacturing process, build lubes, and break-in. Two, who knows how old that oil is. It could have been sitting at the infiniti plant for a couple of months, then sat in my car on its trip from Japan, then sat on the lot for a few months. I figure my oil is was least 6 months old by the time I got to it.

And before anyone asks or comments. Yes I may be wasting money by changing it every 3k. I've waited longer before in other cars and the oil was much more dirty at anything north of 3k. Black oil is unacceptable to me. If you look in the aviation communtiy, the tolerences for oil contaminents is very strict. I guess some of that has just rubbed off on me.

Re: Anyone use syntheic yet..

I broke mine in kinda quick. Followed the manual (under 4K) for the first 250 miles, then I started to get more aggressive with short bursts to redline for a second or two. Then at 1000 miles, took it on a long trip (1100 miles) varying RPM's every 10 minutes or so by changing gears. Changed oil at dealer at 2200 miles with Mobil 1 5/30 and have done it at 7500 mile intervals ever since. Got 31800 on her now and runs better than the day I took her home. Thinking about giving the G to the wife after the 2005 M45 comes out, that thing is looking tough.

Re: Anyone use syntheic yet..

I have used synthetic at every oil change except for the dealer service. I drive a lot of miles and want to protect my investment as much as possible. I have been using 5W-30 Penzoil...and I have to admit I let Jiffy Lube do the work (with supervision of course).

Re: Anyone use syntheic yet..

Most of my driving is in city traffic, so I plan to change oil every 3750 miles myself. I don't plan to extend the time between changes just because I am using synthetic.

Re: Anyone use syntheic yet..

a lot (I would say most)of the oil analysis sheets I have seen don't support going longer than 3500 miles on synthetic in the VQ. Something about this engine doesn't like long intervals.

I am planning on switching back to dino oil at my next change. If I am going to be changing it every 3k anyway I don't think the added expense of synthetic equates to any tangible improvement in protection.
