Couldn't catch a Chevy Cavalier...

Well, I was in 2nd gear, about 3k-35k rpm right behind the Cavalier as we were turning to merge. He heard me and as soon as he was clear we both took off. I could not gain on him at all. I stopped at 55. My car also has the really bad knock/ping sound from it at almost all rpms. Everything is stock and I run 93. Sucks eh.

Re: Couldn't catch a Chevy Cavalier...

Don't know what that Cavalier may have had in it, but for the driver to have "heard you" and then taken off when clear, he must have been fairly confident in whatever it was he had under the hood. As regards the knocking/pinging sound you mention - what is that all about?? I've been a member here for only a couple of weeks, so it was probably covered in previous forums - but I would think that you'd have had the car back to the dealership under warranty until your car is restored to the proper operation for which it was designed - I'd be mad as he** if my car started knocking or pinging under any circumstances!

Mine's a '04 6MT Sedan that has just logged it's 1700th mile, and I'm starting to let 'er rip a little more now - I know that I'm still in 2nd gear at the 55 MPH you quoted, but things are happening so fast that I'm into 3rd before I'd have time to consider whether or not to back off, so this "knocking and pinging" must be pretty bad, and affecting your performance even worse.

What's up with all of this, people??

I had it in once already for it. "Can't duplicate it as usual". I can duplicate it ALL DAY LONG. Just normal driving does it. Here we are at 14,000 miles now too. I am going to take it back and show them personally this time.

Cavalier did not look souped up. Nor did it sound it.

Take your car to a tuner and have it dynoed. If you don't get 205 HP or more on the dyno then you need to push push push and get this taken care of.

Re: Couldn't catch a Chevy Cavalier...

Make sure you turn of the VDC before you race or your car will be slow (especially in a 6speed). Note: If you have no skills, leave the VDC on!
