Blacked Out LED Side Markers 4 Sedans

Well the inspiration came from a DIY LED side marker thread for coupes and I wanted to do something similar but for a sedan and tint it dark enough to match the OB paint. This is my first time working with LED's let alone trying a DIY with LED's. So those with knowledge of how 12v systems, and LED's work feel free to critique my work.

Link to Coupe DIY LED Side marker.

Products Used

2 x http://cgi.ebay.com.au/12cm-White-LED-Strip-Light-DRL-Audi-R8-A4-S4-A6-BMW-E46_W0QQitemZ160238865470QQihZ006QQcategoryZ33714QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262 (Ebay)- $25

2 x G35 4dr Black Side Markers (Ebay) - $20

1 x Pactra R/C Car Lacquer Paint Window Tint (3 Ounce Spray) - RC294 - $3.99

1 x Clear Silicon Adhesive & Sealant (Target) - $1.99

1 x Can of High Temp Dupli-Color High Heat Clear Coat (Auto Zone) - $4.99

And a Dremel w/ cutting disc.

The experience with the Ebayers and ehobbies.com was great I received everything within 2-3 days.

How I did it.

1. With a dremel I separated the clear plastic from the back housing following the line of adhesive, pretty much cutting the glue. First I used a heat gun, but it too long.

2. Prepped the clear plastic by cleaning with rubbing alcohol and applied 2 coats of tint paint, wet sanded with super fine finishing paper (1500 grit) then applied 1 more coat of tint paint. (each coat took the finish darker)

3. 2 light coats of high temp clear coat. Wet sanded. Then 1 last coat of high temp clear coat.

4. Before gluing LEDs to the black housing I had to cut 3 LED off for clearance. Simply line up and glue LEDs down. Let dry.

5. Glue clear plastic back to housing using clear silicon adhesive. May need constant pressure like clamp or weights (make sure to protect with soft material, I used micro fiber towels between markers and clamps) Let dry overnight. I used a finger to smooth the spread of silicon for a cleaner finish.

6. Sealed opening in back of side marker with clear silicon. Let dry.

7. NOTE: I did not use the old light bulb connectors to connect to car. I stripped the neg. & pos. wire from LED and inserted into neg. & pos. connection from car and wrapped with electrical tape.

If I had to do it again I would probably used OEM side markers for better fitment. I am very pleased with the light output considering the side markers are blacked out.

In the second picture you can see some of the clear silicon, I'll be trimming that down for a cleaner finish.

If anyone is interested I have clear OEM Sedan Side Markers with 6/10 Bat Overlays. Thinking of selling for $25. Or I could remove the Overlays and black out like you see above or something lighter for $45.

it looks great man!! I tried doing the coupe DIY one but the led strips for that were too big for the sedan side markers. So I got 2 LED strips collecting dust because I don't know wha to do with them. Otherwise... great job. Looks great!

I'd be interested in the set you got. I would like them the way you did it to your markers

Job well done.

Should've made two rows of LEDs. One white, one amber. Hook the ambers up to your turn signal.

So I took my OEM side markers and blacked them out and they are for sell on ebay right now. These are a little cleaner than what I have now, the clear silicon is smoother and not as rough and the OEM side markers don't have the raised lettering like the after market markers.

If the above link doesn't work try this one...

Oh, and my stock bumper sags a bit because I let a friend borrow my car and they got stuck on a high curb and jacked it up.
