G35 Registration

Re: G35 Registration
$291 in SoCal. The DMV here bases registration on the value of the car (my MSRP was 36,890), so it should go down significatly each year for the first few years. Plus, it's not as bad as it was a few years ago.. when we bought our 98 Grand Cherokee, registration for it was a little over 400, and it was only 28k.
Texas was cheaper when I was there. They group the cars into classes, and the G35 would be a passenger car, about $50 to register if they haven't changed it much. When I brough my old Accord to CA, I had to pay about $150 initially in registration, plus a "$300 Smog Impact Fee" since it was Federal and not CA emissions certified (which was later declared unconstitutional and refunded).
And don't forget smog. Once your car hits about 4 years old, you have to pay about $60 every other year to have it smogged. Texas was a $16/year state inspection fee. I thought the contrast was interesting... the state inspections didn't care about emissions, they checked your lights, brakes, steering, etc.. to make sure the car was in good shape. In CA, your brakelights can be white and your bumper can be dragging on the ground, but there better not be any crud coming out of the tailpipe. < rant off >

Re: G35 Registration
Actually in CA the reg. fee is $30.00, for non-commercial. The rest of what you pay is "VLF", vehicle license fee, it's a additional tax for owning a vehicle to be used on public highways. Many states don't charge anything over the actual reg. fee. Currently there is legislation pending by the House Democrats to triple your registration(VLF) fees. Hold on to your wallets. That's why many people that move here from other states don't register their vehicles here until their old reg. expires, which is illegal in most cases.
