Driving habits are the number one way to improve your gas mileage - basically slow down your top speed and be extra gentle with accelerating and braking.
Second best way is to drop some weight so the engine does less work. I have an 04 X and swapped the exhaust from the cats back. The old one was very heavy. The new one much lighter plus I see a moderate performance improvement. My mileage is consistantly 300+ to a tank now whereas before I would struggle to hit 270.
The 05's have a lighter mid-pipe than the 04's so your mileage improvement may vary (pun intended
)
Keep your trunk empty - leave the golf clubs in the garage unless you plan to use them that day. Consider the no spare tire for weight savings versus the risk of getting stuck with a flat tradeoff.
Finally for the best performance gain for minimal cost, go with a 5/16" plenum spacer. This is not a fuel savings mod, but a performance mod.

I agree with several here. I put a high flow air cleaner and a HKS rear section exhaust and we now get a consistent 23 MPG with a 75% highway/25% city driving mix. The easiest thing to do is driving style. Learn "Demand style" driving technique.
Most folks will benefit from the cruise control, but you can make better MPG without it. The basic idea is to attain your cruising speed on flat ground and DON'T MOVE YOUR FOOT! It's like having an old style pull type throttle that you can lock in one position. even though you may slow up the hills, you will gain momentum on the down side that will make up for it. By not changing your throttle position, you don't use more gas going up the hills and you use less gas going down the hills because you pick up speed. It can work when there is not much traffic or you have multi lanes to drive in. Only use the cruise control on FLAT roads.

I've found that if I time my work commute correctly, I can improve my gas mileage by 3-4 MPG just by avoiding traffic. Luckily, I have some leeway when it comes to the hours I work. I usually try to avoid the morning rush by leaving for work early, and then knock off before everyone else leaves. Smooth sailing=high mileage.
The techniques Texasscout mentioned work as well, but it can be damn near impossible in traffic. Well, unless you want to be an asshøle.
