Mechanic A liar or being Honest?

Well its time for me to do my brakes I bought the pads now I take the pads to this mechanic by my job. He tells me I cant just replace your brake pads I have to do all new rotors. I was like you cant cut them or save them if they still good. He tells me every time you change your brake pads for infiniti you have to change the rotors. I am not a mechanical master mind or anything but I was like I never heard that before. I know you have to replace them when they are warped but everytime I change my brakes sounds like BS. What do you guys think or know about this any truth to what he said?

Some people have run into having to change the rotors after a second pad change. If this is your first pad change, you should only have to machine/resurface them, not replace them entirely.

Depends on what condition your rotors are in now and how much thickess is left. Internet diagnostics is always fun

Depend on the rotor condition. If they are not warpped, then as long as the rotors are thick enought to surface, you don't need to change the rotors.

Without measuring or even looking at them, yeah, he's off. Even the lousy 03 brakes I had on mine, would have the pad changed out a few times before having to get the rotors swapped out.

You can take the rotor off and take it to NAPA or AUTOZONE or any other store and see if they will turn them for you.

If they say that they are under the specs then your mechanic is right. You do need new rotors.

If they can turn them for you then tell your mechanic that you will skull fvck him if he lies to you again.

Lmao thanks guys I will handle that mechanic next time. Doubt I ever even go back to him but thanks for the heads up. I knew that didnt sound to right to change your rotors every time you change your brake pads makes no sense.

Why is everyone jumping on the resurface wagon? Chances are they don't even need to be resurfaced if your existing worn pads wore evenly, which is more often than not the case for a first time pad change.

^indeed.

If you don't feel any vibration in the pedal and there are no visible signs of uneven wear then just slap new pads on it and rock on.

Replace the rotors, 99% of the time I've turned rotors on these cars they were just over min thickness and cars would come back to the dealership within 3-4k miles with a shimmy. It got to be such a big hassle here that we just replace rotors reguardless on the 03/04 and early 05 awd cars with the single piston brakes. I would recommend replacing pads and rotors and save some headache, brakes are one spot you shouldn't be cheap on.

^ if that's the case, then the G is the first vehicle i've heard of that needs rotors with each brake pad change. every other car i've owned has seen at least one resurfacing before being under minimum spec thickness...

maybe not replaced but deff turned.

Nissan rotors suck a$$.

My bro bought a brand new Nissan minivan. (one of those ugly things) and he did not make it to CALI (from WA) on the same rotors.
And they guy is a professional semi truck driver, he knows how to brake.
He overheated his brakes two times and replaced rotors twice in the trip (under warranty in two diff dealerships)

I turned my original rotors twice before replacing first set of pads.

How many miles do you have on your car, and how many times were the pad changed? I am on my 3 set of pads @ 77k miles.. and I will definitely change the rotors next time.. i have "deep" grooves..

I just bought my car about three months ago (44k miles) and have had a shop do my front brakes two weeks ago. Along with pads they had to change the rotors as they were under spec so I'm assuming the previous owner had them turned. Is there anything I can do to lessen the frequency of rotor replacement on my 03 (i.e...make it as normal for most vehicles)? I heard the issue was with the OEM pads that Infiniti originally used and that they have since began using a different type of pad.

My last car (truck) I didn't replace the pads until I had to. To make a long story short the passenger side caliper locked up and warped my rotor...the metal actually caught on fire, it got so hot. I bet I would have had more out of them then that had the caliper not of seized. Served me right for buying a dodge.
