Re: POLL:Do you warm up your car for 30seconds?

I always warm up for 30 seconds, no matter what the weather. It gives your oil pump a chance to get the engine lubricating.

Re: POLL:Do you warm up your car for 30seconds?

Benefit of having remote start............could easily warm up car 2-3 city blocks away.

Re: POLL:Do you warm up your car for 30seconds?

I think it's ok to 'warm' the engine (and other driveline parts) by driving the car, so long as there is no 'spirited' driving.
I generally do this, and put it in gear as soon as the idle calms to about 1k rpm., (and the windows are clear obviously.)
Any spirited driving is done only after complete warmup of all drivetrain parts and tires.

Re: POLL:Do you warm up your car for 30seconds?

Agree. I feel the most important part is not whether or not you drive it cold, but whether or not you get the RPMs too high while it's cold. I like to keep mine below 2500 until the coolant temp is buried at it's normal operating temp. The metals in your car don't know whether your moving at 1000 RPM, or idling at 1000 RPM.

Same here. If the car has been driven within the past hour or
so, there is no wait. In the morning on first startup, just a
few seconds followed by a slow drive down the block.

Re: POLL:Do you warm up your car for 30seconds?

The metals in your engine DO; however, know if they are under load or not - and that's the difference between warming up idling and warming up driving - you've got the parts under load while driving. Most "experts" say it's OK to drive right away (maybe 30 seconds to get the oil circulating on initial startup before rolling), just don't work the drivetrain very hard, and put only a light load on the mechanicals until they are warmed to operating temperature.

Think of it like this: If I roust you out of bed on a cold morning and immediately have you sprint off down the street at top speed, with no warmup at all, you are probably going to strain or pull a muscle or hurt something, because you weren't "warmed up" - plus your performance will suffer and you'll probably be pissed at me, to boot (cars have feelings too, right?). But you don't exactly have to get out of bed slowly and then just sit in a chair "idling" as you warm up, either - the happy medium is how we operate: we get up, move around slowly until we gradually get warmed up and stretched out, then we start "ramping it up" - I believe cars are the same, only in a mechanical way, rather than physiological. Just IMHO - what's yours ?

lol Mine cries if I don't wipe the wheels clean every night when I get home. Too bad I can't just have a thermostat installed on myself, maybe then I wouldn't need coffee every morning. dbarnes, I essentially agree. I probably wouldn't attempt towing a boat at 2000 RPMs while cold.
