Purchased new 2005 G - only1 I-key was given

Hey guys. Im a newbie here in this forum. I did a search and found some information, but not all that I wanted.

I just purchased a 2005 G35 Sedan yesterday and I only received 1 set of the Intelligent Key. I want another one for spare just incase I lose it.

I did some searching around, and a bunch of you guys just purchase a black I-Key off Ebay, and get it reprogrammed through Infiniti. And some places charge $40.

Where do you guys get the key cut at? a lockssmith place?

also, I am assuming this key has an imobilizer, and I cannot drive the car with a key that the locksmith made without the fob? correct?

I have the same issue with the used coupe I bought this past weekend...only got 1 key with the car. I called a couple of locksmiths in my area and the price range for the key and the programming is anywhere from $90 to $350 (total rip off!).

What key do you guys typically purchase off ebay that a locksmith can program? links...?

The problem I have is that the closest Infiniti dealership to me is 2 hours away so I'd prefer to buy the key online and have a locksmith cut and program it.

The immobilizer chip is built into the key not the remote. I believe the keys they are buying do not have the chip in them needed to start the car. They remove the chip and put it into the new key.

You programed them as in just opening the doors, and popping the trunk?
Or did you actually programmed them where you can start the car?

I am in the same exact boat as you. Have 1 intellikey, but do have a spare OEM key. I search ebay all the time better have no luck. Im starting to believe that the Intellikey is a dealer purchasable/programmable item only, I dont really want to think about how much they want. A cheaper route would be to just get a standard chipped key copied at a locksmith. Should be between $50-100.

Theres a few similar threads to this but most of the responses seem to confuse the standard keyless remote fob with the intellikey. Yeah, you can get standard nissan/infiniti remote fobs (non-intellikey) for cheap on ebay and it is very straight forward programming. But I-keys are very different and not easily obtainable, at least in my research.

Now I'm a little confused guys....please advise:

1. What's the differnece between a "Standard Infiniti Key" and an "Intellikey"?

2. The FOB is just the little black remote that opens doors and trunk correct?

3. Can a locksmith actually provide me with a key (locksmith would cut and program key) that will turn the car on and not just open the doors? Or, can only an Infinit dealer do this?

I've looked this topic up on this forum but can't seem to find a thread with a definite answer...?

1. the intellikey system does not use a key to start the car. All you need is your intellikey fob to be on you (in a pocket or nearby) in which you turn a plastic ignition switch. This fob has the standard unlock/lock/trunk/alarm buttons but also houses a spare key which can be used for valeying. That key can be inserted into the ignition normally but is not needed to start the car.

Basically the intellikey gives you the freedom to never have to take the fob out of your pocket to get in or start the car. There are buttons on the doors that allow you to unlock and lock the car when you are near the door with the fob. This system was only available with premium package B on the 2005+ models. 2007+ models came with a push start ignition.

2. All other models came standard with a normal ignition/door key and a wireless entry fob. This key has an imobilizer chip inside.

3. Some locksmiths should be able to cut and program the standard ignition key. The intellikey itself most likely has to be purchased at the dealer, but the key inside the intellikey may be able to be copied and programmed, not 100%.

I have a 2004 Coupe so that means I just have the regular key with the immobilizer chip inside. The cheapest rate I could find locally is a locksmith that will charge me $95 for both the key and the programming of the key. He said if I get the key myself (from an online source for example) he'll charge me $65 for just the programming. He did mention that he or I would have to contact an Infiniti dealer so they could provide us with the car's individualized "Pin" which is what he would use to program the key. What do you think of his price, is it reasonable? How about the whole notion of having to contact an Infiniti dealer for the "Pin"? Is this standard procedure for a locksmith to do when programming one of these keys?

Thanks for all your help.

I had a locksmith cut and program a key for me over the weekend. The key/cut/program only cost $75 total. The stealership wanted $120+ for the key, and another $60 to cut and program it.

I think there is a shortage of info on the intelligent key because it has to be programmed by the dealer, so there isn't much to talk about. I don't think there is any way around it.

FYI I bought one off ebay. The ad made it look OEM but it is definitely not. I've been watching ebay since then and I've not seen a single OEM intelligent key. The one I got looks ok, but not made as well as the OEM, and the chrome rubbed off in the envelope in the mail. IMO since I will have to get it programmed at the dealer anyway, the savings over the real one isn't enough, I should have just gotten the real one. I've not yet yad my ebay one programmed so I can't comment on how well it works.

I bought just a regular replacement key, not an intelligent key.

One question though... my old key doesn't work now, has anyone else had a problem like that? I'm assuming that since the new key got programmed, it de-programmed my old key. I called the locksmith today, but he's out of town until tomorrow.
