Rear bumper question

Hi everyone,

I've been reading the forums ever since I bought my G35 Sedan two weeks ago. About a week after I bought the car I noticed an "issue" with the gap between the rear bumper cover and the trunk lip. Below is a pic to illustrate what I'm talking about (the pic is not my car, I'll post actual pics ASAP).

The area I'm referring to is within the red rectangle. The problem is that the gap between the bumper cover and the trunk lip is not even all the way across. The gap is wider on the left side, particularly in the area indicated by the red arrow. I know the problem is not with the trunk because the backup lights and the taillights are perfectly aligned. Also, the carfax was clean so I don't think the car has been in any accidents.

I'm extremely picky with small details like this and I don't know how I missed it when I originally looked at the car, but it's driving me crazy! Has anyone else ever had/observed this problem? Any thoughts on what might be causing it? Thanks!

I read through that thread, but my problem is not that there is a gap, that doesn't bother me. The problem is that the gap isn't even all the way across. It's noticeably wider on the left side and then becomes narrower the farther right you look.

It's possible that the left side of the rear bumper may have been misaligned from either a past accident or a weight from something placed on the bumper. I'm just guessing here but the bumper may be missing a couple clips/screws to hold its place to the body of the car. If you're concerned about this, go to a body shop and get the car checked out.

Based on the picture it does not look to be out of normal tolerance… You are like many of us – you will notice small (seemingly) insignificant flaws that no one else would ever even see… wait until you start modding – then the scrutiny really will drive you nuts – I’ve learned to live with small imperfections that most people never notice (actually no one ever notices the things that bug me until I point it out to them).

IOW – your trunk looks fine/normal to me.

The picture is not from OP's car. To OP: Maybe we can get a better idea when we see the picture of your car. Please post the picture taken from your car so we can see how bad it is.

You can adjust your trunk lid or bumper cover to help even out the gap.

I had my local body shop look at it and they adjusted the trunk lid a bit. The lights still line up too, which was my initial concern about messing with the trunk. I also noticed that there is a lot more flex when I push down on the higher side of the bumper. I'm guessing that the bumper is just slightly warped for some reason. Someone could have sat on it or stepped on it or something.

In any event, the gap is less noticeable now. When I get the car back tonight I'll try to snap some pics if the light is good enough. If it keeps bugging me I can always buy a new bumper cover and see if that fixes it.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. This is an awesome forum.

I noticed that when I took my bumper off and back on a couple of times.

There is a reason for the gap. When you slam the trunk shut it will hit the bumper and damage the paint where the trunk meets the bumper. I had that problem before I got my bumper repainted so I left a gap intentionally. You can adjust the gap by putting a spacer in between the crash support and the bumper cover but the trunk will hit the bumper if you drop the lid. There many soft materials to use as a spacer.

Glad it worked out and welcome to the family.

Thanks! Sorry I never did post pics. After the trunk lid adjustment the "problem" is so minimal that I doubt anyone would see it on camera.
