As far as I'm concerned, here is the most important safety related reason to have Neutral:

In icy conditions when you are in a skid, you need to take your foot off the gas, shift into Neutral and steer out. By shifting into neutral, you are stopping all forward drive to the wheels and you gain more control over the car.

Have to have a neutral between dem and rep....or drive and rev! I dont know why i said that but it was funny at 6 in the morning!

You need a way to disengage the engine from the drivetrain.

What happens if your toyota's gas pedal sticks? You gonna shift to Park at 80MPH?
