Clearcoat chipping/fading?
Clearcoat chipping/fading?
Please take a look at the following pics and let me know what you think is happening. To me it looks like the clearcoat is worn away in a few places. I first noticed a mark on the trunk but now I'm seeing more and more spots. There is a pretty good sized splotch on the roof. I don't think these are being cause by bird s**t since it is garaged kept and I hand wash it about once a week. If I see any bird droppings I clean it up right away. I have tried using a clay bar on the spots and it doesn't seem to make them bigger or smaller. Has anyone else experienced this? Is the paint covered under warranty, and if so, for how long?
It's an '04 Desert Platinum sedan if that helps at all.

Have you had bird crap sit on there for a while in the past?? I am not talking about just lately but in general. It looks like there was bird droppings in those areas and that damaged the paint bad. That's what it usually looks like. It takes a while before it gets this bad but it spreads and grows, trust me. Bird ***** need to be washed and removed within a day or two after they get on the paint because otherwise it gets baaad.
No bird crap has sat on it in the past or recently. I go over the car pretty carefully to make sure things like this don't happen. It feels pretty smooth if you run your fingers over it. The spots on the trunk are smaller than a dime. The one on the roof is the only real big one. I don't think it's from bird crap (even though the one of the roof is more of the right size and shape). Could acid rain cause something like this? When I bought the car used there was only on spot on the right rear quarter panel. Now there are at least two small ones on the trunk, more on the right rear quarter panel, the big one on the roof, and a few smaller ones on the roof. At home it is parked in the garage. At work it sits in a large parking lot with no trees or overhead structures nearby (I know birds flying overhead can still make droppings).
I'll try swinging by a paint shop to see what they say and I'll check with Infiniti when I bring it in for the next oil change.
I was just curious if this was a problem that certain colors or certain years experienced. I know when my friend was looking at the '08 sedan the Infiniti tech said to stay away from the red color since it chips more easily.
The paint on my mom's Porsche 944 Turbo was covered under warranty but I think that was more due to corrosion.

acid rain could definitely cause that, as well as parking your car under a tree during rainfall. All the chemicals from trees gets washed on to your car and if not washed/waxed shortly after could accumalate and cause this. Since you bought the car used, there is no way to tell what condition the previous owner had the car in. Remember a dealer will make any car pretty for sale, previous condition unknown. It may be something that can be taken care of easily. Good paint shops can do amazing things these days.
