When do you change the pcv valve?

Hi,

My car is 4 yr at under 29k miles. When do you change the pcv valve? I don't see that on the manual and how do I know if it goes bad?

Thanks...

This is very easy to check. All you have to do is unscrew it off the top of the engine. Refer to the FSM for the exact location though. When the engine is running, a properly working PCV should have a vacuum causing your finger to get sucked into it.

I changed my PCV valve at 60K miles. When I removed the old one, it looked like it had never been replaced before, and it smelled like gas vapors all over. The part costs around $16 brand new from local Infiniti dealer.

I don't believe it has a specified replacement interval.

no need to replace it if it isn't clogged, and if it is just clean it with some solvent

These things rarely, if ever, wear out.

takes 30 seconds on most cars. just check it every other oil change. shake it when you remove it and you should be able to hear a clicking sound (just like you hear a clicking/tapping sound when you shake a spray paint can). If you dont hear the clicking sound, it means the valve is blocked off by sludgy oil and you can clean it out or get a new one (15 bucks).

its weird the G manual doesnt say anthing, the owners manual on my suzuki stipulates a replacement interval.

Good to know. Thanks Neal. I'll check it on my next oil change.

FYI, there is a DIY video for the PCV valve replacement procedure (posted by bythabay in his DIY video series thread):
