Clear tail lights?
Clear tail lights?
Hey guys, is it legal to have clear taillights? What I mean is to have the plastic tail light cover clear but the bulb in there to be red so when you hit the breaks, you get red light but when you don't it looks clear. Same with the turn signals. Is this legal or do the tail lights have to look red as well? I'm just asking cause I figure it would look pretty cool to have a clear rear light cluster.

Re: Clear tail lights?
To avoid any problems, try to get DOT approved lights. But, you should be okay as long as the light up red (running lights and brakes) and there is a red reflective portion (that reflects red if hit by lights) so people can see you at night if you are stalled or lights off on the side of the road.

Re: Clear tail lights?
Like RSP said, it's not really the lens, it's the colors emitted by the bulbs...As long as the taillight/turn signal bulbs emit the legal color, you should be okay...And make sure that you do some research before taking the word of a clear corner/taillight/headlight manufacturer on DOT legality- APC was found to be lying about the legality of several of their taillights, etc. about a year or so ago

I would also be interested in getting those clear tail lights if available. Who knows maybe we can get a group buy going if it can be done.

That's not entirely true. I believe there needs to be an area that reflects red as someone else pointed out. The clear corners for our cars are illegal (in CA) because they do not reflect amber. Just having a colored bulb is not enough.

Yeah, only in Crummyfornia. Sucks to be out there! I remember getting pulled over for stupid crap like that. I know I've said it a million times, but I'm glad to be done with that liberal hippy douche state.
Re: Clear tail lights?
Does anyone know if the tail lights are a soild red all the way through the plastic or is it just a clear plastic with red film? If it is red film, maybe we can just cut around the lights and clear them?? Any thoughts?

Re: Clear tail lights?
I think its solid. I don't know that anyone makes these, clearcorners.com could probably come up with something if they haven't done this already. I'd like to see it first before commenting...
