Why does my AC smell like old gym socks?

I've noticed that when I turn on my car (it is only 3 months old) that the AC blows very humid.. it reaks like old gym socks or something, and then it goes away after a min or 2. Anyone else familiar with this?

Very likely you have condensation that hangs out in the system, and it's growing mold and funk. Not sure how you would fix that.

Speaking of this, where does the condensation drip out on the G? BTW, do any of you guys smoke in your car?

I have the same problem and my buddy with a G35 has the same problem. I really think it's a problem that the dealer should take care of. My Dealer told me that there is nothing wrong and they can't do anything about it.

You live in a humid climate? You may have to run straight vent before shutting it down, at least during the summer.

I live where it's very humid, and my G only has 3,000 miles on it, and I have the same problem. I lost my new car smell, and now it smells like a bag of farts!!! Is there a cure for this?

Re: Why does my AC smell like old gym socks?

From my own experience..
When you push the A/C button, the vent closes to recycle air mode. This helps your car cool down fast. To prevent your problem, push the fresh air button next to the "closed vent" button after you feel the inside temp getting comfortable. This will draw outside air into cabin preventing that mildew smell & condensation.
It is a mental chore but has to be done. You can also kill the A/C a few minutes before your destination, leaving the fan on. This will dry out the vents.
I had the same problem in my Maxima, only it never forced the vents closed.
Give it a try.

You need BG Frigi Service Play the video clip to see how it works.

Can you just have that service done, or do you have to have the entire thing done? What does it smell like?

I don't really know. I've never had the service done. But I hear that's what the pros use.

Re: Why does my AC smell like old gym socks?

The simplest solution, as somone alluded to earlier, is to NEVER use recirc. Every car I've ever owned with A/C stinks after using recirc, you just have to avoid it like the plague.. I only use mine when i'm driving behind a big stinky truck with black smoke billowing out of it or something. One of the things I do if things get a little stinky (my wife uses recirc in her car all the time and it always stinks) is turn on the A/C, set it on outside-air mode and crank the heat up for a while. Leave it on and hot (AC still on) to let it dry out good for 15 minutes or so and then promise yourself you'll never use recirc again.

Re: Why does my AC smell like old gym socks?

You can actually "clean" it if you forget and the smell comes back by doing this:

Put it on recirc and crank it to full. Spray some Lysol into the AC intake (next to the center console on the passenger side) and let it run for a while. That kills all the mold and mildew. Just be sure and switch it back to fresh air mode before you shut off the car.

I did this last summer and it worked very well. I live in Houston where the humidity rarely drops below 90% in the summer.
