Help With Windshield Chip Repair?

Hi, All -

My windshield got struck by a small stone yesterday, and it left a dime-sized, circular chip mark. It has not started to crack yet, and I'm hoping that by getting it repaired that I can preclude having to replace the entire windshield. Can anyone here recommend a reputable repair service, preferably one that makes house calls, in the Nassau County, NY area? Thanks in advance!

Re: Help With Windshield Chip Repair?

I'm nowhere near Nassau County, NY, but when my Volvo's windshield was damaged I got a referral from my insurance agent. They've got a vested interest in your car so their referrals are generally to be trusted.

My G was also hit by a small stone and I took it to a repair kiosk set up in the parking lot of a mall. (They're popping up all over the Northwest.) The repair took about 30 minutes and they called the insurance company who took care of the cost. I don't have glass coverage but apparently many insurers see this sort of repair as a good way to keep down the cost of windshield replacements because the chips often lead to complete windshield failure.

Re: Help With Windshield Chip Repair?

Cale,

Thanks for the advice! I contacted my insurance company (USAA), and they established an appointment with a company named SafeLite for tomorrow morning! I was very impressed with the expediency! I will let you know how things turn out with the repair.

Thanks Again,

Skiv

My C5s windshield was hit by a rock and Safelite did a great job.

Re: Help With Windshield Chip Repair?

URGENT ! Don't do a chip fix repair. Replace the windshield! Two reasons: 1.) the claim for insurance counts the same whether the car is totaled or it's a $15 buck job relative to the insurance industry claims database - most companies just count the number of claims per unit time, and 2.) if the car is leased, they will charge you for a new windshield anyway when you turn it in.

I have State Farm - and their deal is for free they will send someone out to home or work and fix with that plastic goo - with limits results (you can usually still see the damage). But if one pays the $150 deductable, they'll send someone out to pop a new glass. And as our windshiels get little stone chips over time, making the glass hazy when the light is at certain angles, new glass now and then makes the car like new.

My two cents ...

Re: Help With Windshield Chip Repair?

Skiv,

If you follow number6's advice and pay to have your windshield replaced now you will not get two benefits. First, you will have spent money that could be making interest or appreciating in a financial asset. Secondly, you will not get much benefit because I believe you took delivery of your G sometime in March so your glass is like-new. Two years from now, depending on your mileage, you may have enough pits to make it worth doing a replacement and then enjoy a much cleaner look.

Re: Help With Windshield Chip Repair?

Hi, All -

SafeLite camer over to my house on Saturday and fixed the chip in 10 minutes! Yes, you can still see the repaired area, but it is much better than it was. They guarantee it won't crack, and that is all I wanted. I did consider having the whole windshield replaced, but I decided to wait until a more severe incident occurs. I am not leasing, and I have zero deductible for glass. This is my third claim for glass on three different vehicles over 8 years and was also involved in one accident [not my fault] in that same time period, and my insurance rates were never affected... USAA is a great company! In fact, I get a dividend check back from them every year! They are however restricted to current or ex-military officers and their families; so I don't know if any of you will benefit from their services or not. Thanks again for all the information/input!

Regards,

Skiv

USAA also insures active enlisted members.

Re: Help With Windshield Chip Repair?

Noel48 -

I stand corrected! I just spoke with USAA, and you're right... they changed their eligibility requirements, and now offer insurance to active duty enlisted. I was told they are underwritten by a different company, but fall under the USAA umbrella. I am not sure what the implications of this are with respect to the yearly dividend check, but nonetheless, it's a great company and the rates are reasonable. Thanks for the info!

Re: Help With Windshield Chip Repair?

I have the same problem happening to me. I had the chip repaired but it is starting to spread. Now I heard PPG glass is better then the regular OEM one and others are saying PPG isnt as good. Either way I need to replace my windshield and I am not going through my insurance co. bc i have a $500 deductible and glass isnt covered so I am better just buying a new one. Any advice on what I should do? thanks
