Glove box rattle

Hi all!

I have a 2004 G35 and have noticed an annoying rattle which seems to be coming from the glove box area. The rattle only seems to happen in the morning when it's cooler and goes away in the afternoon. I cannot seem to isolate the rattle as to where it is exactly coming from so I have not been able to eliminate it.

anyone else have this problem? any TSB for it?

Thanks!

I have it too, annoying as crap. I've strategically placed a can hugger in the glovebox for now, but I will take it in for a warranty repair in due course. This is completely unacceptable in a $30K car.

Check the battery holder. I had the same problem and it turned out that the bar that held the battery in place was loose causing rattles.

As far as the rattles, I had to bring in my car 5 times for different rattles....fortunately, the dealership was kewl about it and I also got a chance to rag out the loaners!!!!

I had a rattle in my glovebox door as well. The noise would go away when the door was open. The dealership finally put in a couple of rubber bumper pads that press against the door to solve the problem.

Phil,

I have the same thing, only mine's closer to the center console. Please let us know if you get yours fixed.

Thanks,

Re: Glove box rattle

I just had a rattle in the passenger-side dash fixed very quickly by my service department. It sounded like something plastic that was loose near the glovebox or behind it in the dash. They said that the dash was "misaligned" from the factory and adjusted it. It's been silent and solid ever since (five weeks over some rough roads).

Good luck!

Re: Glove box rattle

Thanks everyone for replying!!! - I sincerely appreciate all your responses! - the glovebox rattle is still happening for me and it's frustrating the hell out of me because I cannot find the exact source and fix it. I am somewhat wary of taking it to the dealer to have it fixed b/c I have heard stories that the dealer can make it worse or just not find any rattles.

Dudefish,
what do you mean by using a "can hugger in the glovebox"? I have tried placing foam inserts on the side walls of the door and this makes it sightly harder to close the door (which leads me to believe that the foam inserts are creating a tigher seal) but unfortunately, they have not worked. I have noticed that when I empty the contents from the glovebox that the rattle is lower in sound.

Gordgee,
When you say that the dealer fixed the problem by using rubber bumper pads that press against the door, where exactly are these pads placed? As I mentioned above, I have placed foam inserts on the side walls of the door which press against the door when I close it but this hasn't worked.
Just like you, I have noticed that the noise would go away when the door was open but this has not helped me isolate where the problem is.

Quikrocket,
The rattle is definitely coming from somwhere near or in the glovebox but like you, it is nearer to the center console. Sounds like you might have had the same rattle as I am having - Can you provide any advice on how to fix it?

Thanks all!

Re: Glove box rattle

I just had a foam rubber can hugger in the pax seat. I opened the glove box, positioned the can hugger in there so that it woudl be sort of squished (not too much) when the door was closed. That keeps the door tight and it doens't rattle any more.

One other thing I am going to try is a little dab of white lithium grease on the latch mechanism. That might quiet the sound.

Re: Glove box rattle

Phil,

I took mine in once, and the dealer said "could not duplicate." I know where there's a really torn up road near the shop, so next time I'll take a technician with me so they can hear it. I'll keep you posted...

Get real, there isn't a car made that doesn't have some minor things like that, the roads are hard on a vehicle, drive a Buick or something, then you'll appreciate the G35 more rattle wise.

Re: Glove box rattle

I may have had the same rattle/s. I thought they were from the glove box. Then, upon further examination, they seemed to be coming from the defroster vent area, as if something in that area was rattleing. We (the dealer and I) isolated every possible object that could be the culprit with no luck. By the way mine were temperature dependant also. I got some rubber weatherstriping from home depot and used a popsicle stick to stuff it down between the dash and the front window from one side of the car to the next. No more rattle. Ever.

I also had the rattle that I thought was coming from the center console area. After many tries, I found that a small piece of weatherstripping under the little rubber dimples on the center armrest fixed that problem. One thing I've learned is that the sounds may very well not really be coming from where you think they sound like they're coming from!!

I didn't realize there was enough space there to do that, but that sure sounds like it did the trick, does the wx-stripping show up at all once in there? Mine is fine now that it has warmed up, but I do have that same "noise" in my dash in the winter. Still much better than the Buick, LOL!

Re: Glove box rattle

wellz, never heard a benz or BMW or acura or is300 rattle like this car...kind of sad~
i mean the performance is great, but the interior is really bad...the driver seat is poorly done...and too much plastic...

Re: Glove box rattle

You can bareley see the weatherstripping between the window and the glareshield. Partly because you stuff it down that far and partly because of the black on the window. Use somthing like a plastic spatula to push it down there.
