Why is it so important to spend time and money replacing an in cabin filter that has no impact on engine performance. Seems like another marketing scam by the car companies to empty our pockets for a trivial maintenance item.
I can see the importance of it if one has allergies, I guess.

WHy not maintain your car? Why let things go? I always see people who don't maintain their cars. They have dash and exterior bulbs out, the A/C barely blows because the cabin filter is clogged, the tires are in need of a balance, little things like that. If you fix them as they come up, your car runs mint. Let it go and all the sudden you have a laundry list of crap to fix. Not everything should revolve aroung getting the max amount of HP out of your engine.
Plus i have alergies, and the season is about to start so i gotta get my new filter in ASAP.

That filter still looks pretty clean to me. Just because it's not white like a new one doesn't mean that it's occluded. I'm sure it feels good putting a nice clean filter in regardless of wether you need it or not. I'm still on the same one at 90k miles and the air blows strong and smells fine. I'll probably change it at 100k just for the heck of it.
