First let me say that I think these look cool as hell.
A few concerns I have is that you are opening your self up to a lot of hassle from Police and liability in the event of a rear end collision.
The California vehicle code 24600e states “Tail lamps shall be red in color and shall be plainly visible from all distances within 500 feet to the rear except that tail lamps on vehicles manufactured after January 1, 1969, shall be plainly visible from all distances within 1,000 feet to the rear.
24603e states "All stop lamps shall be plainly visible and understandable from a distance of 300 feet to the rear both during normal sunlight and at nighttime, except that stop lamps on a vehicle of a size required to be equipped with clearance lamps shall be visible from a distance of 500 feet during such times.
One, these overlays don’t conform to the red color requirement. Two, you have reduced their effectiveness during both day and night. Essentially you have just given the police an invitation to pull you over. At the very least you’ll get a fix it ticket. But more likely they will find other things to screw you with.
In the event of a rear end collision, it could be successfully argued that by altering your tail lights, you have created a dangerous situation that prevented the driver behind you from seeing your tail lights. So in addition to a screwed up car, you’re now at fault. Wait till your insurance company finds out that you altered your tail lights. You’ll be lucky they don’t sue you for negligence.
I am all for modifying a car but when it comes to the safety items on a car, I leave them alone. Plus you’re taking away the greatest annoying feature of the car, those bright tail lights. One thing I hate is when people pull right up on my bumper at a stop light. What I do is casually press and let of the brake a number of times. The lights are so bright that they hurt your eyes. It’s just a nice passive aggressive way of getting back at an inconsiderate driver.

yep, an excuse for the cops to pull you over......i wouldn't cover, even with the lightest tint, the rear lights for safety issues.....shodog said it best, "In the event of a rear end collision, it could be successfully argued that by altering your tail lights, you have created a dangerous situation that prevented the driver behind you from seeing your tail lights." What's your rational to the judge about the tinted tailights then?
btw: this is how i get rid of tailgaters......i let them follow close and brake late as i enter a corner, or sometimes i don't even brake at all depending on my speed and the corner, then power my way through.......it's funny seeing in the rear view mirror the tailgating vehicle get all out of shape!!!
