Newbie: Where is the 20 HP (coupe vs. sedan)?

Hi guys. First time here. I apologize if this has been discussed before:

I am strongly considering purchasing a G35. I have always been a sedan kinda guy but I hate to give up 20 HP. What constitutes the 20 HP difference? Is it something simple like restrictive intake/exhaust or is it intentionally programmed in the computer? Is there an easy fix to make up the 20 HP deficit? Thanks again.

The horsepower to the wheels isn't that much different, and the weight savings of the sedan essentially bring performance on par with the coupe. Don't pay too much attention to those numbers.

I looked at both & like you wondered about the missing ponies.
As mentioned there is little difference in the butt dyno between the two.
That said, I think most of the difference is in the exhaust.
FWIW....
I got my sedan in May and have added a Z-tube (stock air inlet tube from the 350Z) and an aftermarket exhaust system. I haven't dynoed the car but am pretty sure I have most of that 20hp back.

I don’t know but would have guessed the difference was in the exhaust or exhaust manifold. There is real difference in the sound of the coupe from the sedan. The sedan is fairly baffled and the coupe sounds very sweet (powerful).

Like I said, I really don’t know where the difference comes from so I’m guessing.

Re: Newbie: Where is the 20 HP (coupe vs. sedan)?

Thanks Paul. I understand the 260/280 are crank numbers but why do you say the WHP is not that different? I assume the losses would be equal and therefore the WHP would be different by +/-20.

As for the weight difference, I noticed (infiniti.com) that there is only a 30-80lb difference from sedan to coupe (sedan being lighter), depending on the package.

I am still thinking the coupe must be faster (on paper anyway).

Am I wrong? Thanks again.

Re: Newbie: Where is the 20 HP (coupe vs. sedan)?

Thanks inTgr8r. I understand that adding exhaust and intake to the sedan will raise it ~20HP, but that wasn't my point. If you were to add the same intake/exhaust to the coupe, the coupe would be up 20HP as well. I am trying to figure out what it is between the two cars that makes a 20 HP difference, given identical engines.

I have a suspision it is in the computer and it is a marketing thing. Similar to how Audi of America put a program in the computer to limit the S4 horsepower so as not to step too much on A6/S6 sales. ???

Ptatohed
I believe the coupe comes with a better stock exhaust than the sedan. The Y pipe is the only common element.
Also I think that the 20 hp difference may be slightly exagerated for marketing hype.
It wouldn't do to have a sedan equal to the mighty coupe...JK (sort of)

Have not some sedan owners speculated that the published power numbers are a little underrated?

Re: Newbie: Where is the 20 HP (coupe vs. sedan)?

I have a 04 Sedan G35 6mt. I dynoed 234 hp and 233.8 tq to the wheels. I only had a ztube and k&n drop in. My car dynos the same or actually possibly a hair more than a stock coupe does. This was on a 100 degree day with no cool down time either.

There is no hp difference between the 2 cars, and the sedan is lighter.

You can see my graphs I posted last week in sedan section. Look for my name.

Dyno 07-07-04 - 234.2 hp & 233.8 tq

Thanks for the info.
Your numbers support what many have speculated (inluding me)

Re: Newbie: Where is the 20 HP (coupe vs. sedan)?

It is specifically in the midpipe resonator. The sedan has an evil box mechanism and the coupe has a straight through heimoltz design. The Coupe midpipe bolts right in and the ECM corrects to give the power. Everything from the exhaust manifold to cats to Y pipe is the same as on the Z. The G35C and the Z share a crossflow dual outlet can, while the sedan has a dual outlet straight through. With bolt ons, my sedan is as quick as my ex-enthusiast Z with stock running gear via G Tech. You also lose an additional 24 lbs going from Sedan midpipe to Coupe.

Basically what everyone is telling you is, you can't lose. Stick with what gets you going. Don't worry about anyone else.

G_Monster: You might want to take a look at the write-up Gsedan35 did on the sedan midpipe. I believe it was Gsedan35 but I can't find it.

I do agree with the weight savings from the coupe mid-pipe.

Off-topic, but if anyone around DFW has one they don't need/for sale, pls pm me.

Thanks.

Re: Newbie: Where is the 20 HP (coupe vs. sedan)?

another option is a Magnaflow resonator (my part number was 10436) to weld in place of the stock one. It can be 18-22 inches and still not be loud, I put a 22" one on my ride.
