my bet: you need a throttle body.

pretty common.

mine did that once, turned it off and let it sit for like five minutes, seemed to reset and it was fine... i'd hate to see what it takes to enter a really serious "limp" mode...

It is called the Throttle Position Sensor, same exact thing happened to me. I was driving, all of a sudden all the lights lit up in the dash, and the accelerator stopped working. I turned the car off, let it sit for a sec, and restarted it. Everything came back, but it would do this sporadically every hour or so of driving.

Took it to Infiniti, they had it fixed that day. The only other thing they said it could have been preliminarily was the throttle body, either needed to be cleaned or replaced.

Hope this helps!

someone I know did the same thing when he had his aftermarket headers installed and started throwing CEL, he ignored it until one day it went to "limp mode". He took his car to the stealership, and had to replace the O2 sensor. After couple of weeks it happened again. He had no choice but to install the OEM header back, because he just cant keep on replacing his O2 sensors from time to time

All cars have different degrees of limp mode. Some have different parameters and revert to safe tunes, limit RPM and other factors if they are able.

None that i know completely disable the car from driving. That would be unsafe as if the car faults in a busy road, you still need the ability to get off the road.

But like said, TPS more than likely

Same thing just happened in my coupe, got the code scanned and its the TPS. I know we have a 70k or 75k powertrain warranty. Do you think its covered? I just hit 63k.
Another thing I noted. If I dont use wide open throttle the TPS is fine. Only after I go WOT does it go out...

I had this same problem last week. I hooked up the code reader and it read "P1121". I checked it online and it says "ELECTRIC THROTTLE CONTROL ACTUATOR". I went to the autozone and bought it for 120. Changed it and then reset the "Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning".

Took it to the dealer yesterday. My TPS was bad. They replaced the throttle body under the 70K powertrain warranty. Wasn't too happy they used a reman though...
But they said I had cracked compression rod bushings, and need a new belt...

How'd did you/they change out the actuator or the TPS? The actuator and TPS and the throttle body is all one piece, isn't? I know it's held together by some pressed rivets instead of bolts and screws. I'm having this problem now and need my car up and running by Monday.

This may or may not be of value. Before I bought the G35, I had a G20. Although, the cars are much different, I would imagine that there could be some similarities.

Every 2-3 years, my G20 would become unresponsive. I would stomp on the gas, and the car would creep up a max speed of ~35 MPH. Whenever this happened, I knew it was time to get the battery replaced. I don't know why, but having the battery replaced fixed it everytime. Perhaps stop by autozone and have them test the battery. It's free, what do you have to lose?

Also, before I sold the car, the CEL came on a few times. Although there was no noticeable change in performance, I can't stand to see that little light on. I took it to autozone and they told me the computer was throwing a P1126 code, which was the TPS. They wanted to sell me a new TPS for ~$100 and told me that once the part was opened that I could not return it (I only asked about return policy on parts in case that was not the problem). I took it to a mechanic near my work and he told me for sure that it was the O2 sensor. He reset the ECU and the light never came back on. We also laughed about what autozone had told me.

I certainly wouldn't think so...at least that was never the case with my G20.

I change the gas pedal switch and fixed the problem. You gotta reset it with a scanner afterwards. This had me stressed for a while. I replaced the knock sensors, throttle body sensor. And the gas pedal was the one making the problem
