Alternator or Just Corrosion?

Hi Again,

Please forgive me if this is already mentioned here.

My 03 sedan has 99k for mileage and I notice sluggishness in the pedal when I turn on the foglights or flick the high beams on. If the car isn't driven for a day or two it needs to be jumped. The battery is fairly new. There's a decent amount of corrosion on the terminals that needs to be cleaned. (never realized before how important it is to clean them).

After a quote from my dealer of $800 for a new alternator - I hope it's as simple as cleaning those dirty terminals!

Any ideas? Thanks.

I'll send you an alternator with around 80k on it for $120 shipped. Let me know if you are interested.

Is this a non-factory battery? Corrosion (esp if you require frequent cleaning) is an indicator of an acid leak.

If you use a factory battery, your acid levels were too high and the boil over contaminated the terminals. A good washing should take care of your issue.

Make sure electrolyte levels are OK.

Def clean or replace the terminals. A loose or bad connection can give symptoms as if the battery is completely dead

Have a charging system test done before throwing parts at the problem.

Also, you have a digital multimeter that reads DC amps? If so, you can unplug the POS terminal from the battery and get an amperage reading with the car off to determine if you have a short causing a drain somewhere on the vehicle.

You can also remove the battery and have it load tested to see if it's still good or internally shorted.

As for the charging system test, you can either remove the alt, or drive the car somewhere that has the ability.

Sounds good. Thanks

The battery is one of those from Autozone, so I had them test it after I cleaned off the termnals yeaterday. They say it's fine.

Today it started up right away. I'm gonna do some more testing before I grab that alternator.

Looks like I got few more things to do before I start modding.
