Loud A/C compressor '05 G35 Sedan

I've taken my G to the dealer a few times about my loud a/c compressor already. The first time they replaced the compressor but the noise never went away. Now they're saying it's normal even though the sound is quite apparent. It sounds like rattling when I accelerate the engine to approximately 3k RPM with the fan speed and temperature settings at max. The only way to make the sound go away is to vent some of the r134a from the system but then I loose cooling efficiency. Still under factory warranty as I have 57k miles.

I was wondering if anyone has the same problem? It would also help if I could find someone in the area with an '05/'06 G35 sedan to compare the sound to. Maybe a local group meeting. I live in Phoenix.

Thanks!

Good idea on the video. Done!

It sounds kind of like a lawn mower engine and goes away as soon as the A/C is turned off. Hope the sound is clear enough in the video. Thanks for taking a listen.

I have 2003 G35 and my AC has been doing the same thing for about one year. When AC is on there is a sound(maybe like lawn mover) that goes up with the rpm. It can easily be heard after 2500 rpm. Not sure what it is myself. Someone said that compressor is going bad and other the bearings are shot.

Out of warranty so it will be nice to know if there is an wasy fix. A/C still cools OK.

There is a TSB on this problem for the 2003 models ITB-02057. Infiniti may just fix your A/C noise on their dime. You should give them a call and reference that TSB number. Unfortunately for me, it doesn't apply to the 2005's and they've already deemed this annoying sound to be normal but for sure it is not normal. They are just brushing me off.

I really need to find a reputable Infiniti/Nissan tech out here in Phoenix before my warranty is up. Got 3500 miles/3 months left.

Which dealer have you been going to? Try a different one. You have numerous ones to choose from in the PHX area.

+1. I dont know what the sound is, but my car has been doing that for over a year now. It sounds like the compressor is struggling even though I never had a problem with cold air.

To isolate the sound you can try revving your engine to 3k rpm and then turn your a/c on at full blast 60 degrees. Check for the sound in question. Then turn off the a/c keeping your rpm at 3k, see if the sound goes away.

Regarding the dealers out here in Phoenix, there are 3 in the general area. Two of them are in Scottsdale and one in Mesa. The first one (Infiniti of Scottsdale on McDowell Rd) took my car in and claimed to have replaced the a/c compressor but the noise was still there. No change at all. In fact, it didn't even blow as cold anymore. So I took it back and they all heard the noise so they took it in and again, claimed to have replaced it a second time. The noise was still there. I mentioned this to the service managed and he said that my car was used and didn't know what I expected them to do about it. So I opened a case with Infiniti Consumer affairs etc... Dealer #2 deemed the noise to be normal. Now every dealer that pulls up my car history sees the complaints in the system and says it's normal when clearly it's not. I’ve had a very bad experience with Infiniti service and Consumer Affairs. Even Consumer Affairs is siding with the dealer since they are claiming the sound is normal.

you also have Infiniti of Peoria, but its a much further drive.

05X's seem to have a lot of similarities with the 03 and 04. Wonder if they kept that the same.

You're right, I didn't realize there was a dealer there. I could try taking my car to Infiniti of Peoria. There's also one in Mesa. I've already tried two Infiniti dealers in Scottsdale and one in Tucson. They were all useless and figured they're all the same. You never know though I might get lucky with the Peoria or Mesa dealers.

I'm contemplating buying a used a/c compressor on ebay and installing it. Can't stand having this annoyance especially when I'm under warranty.

Just dropped off the car at Infiniti in Mesa. I had a quick conversation with the technician there and he said the a/c compressor sound is normal on this model. Apparently others have brought in their car complaining about the same thing and changing out the compressor didn't fix the sound. I just can't accept this as being normal. My '97 accord with 209k miles is dead silent with the a/c on.

Let's see what the dealer comes up with today when they call. I'm betting on "it's normal".

what about the "retrofit" kit that they have for the 2003? Are they not the same compressor? In that kit they use nto only the compressor, but they also route the overflow differently and use a different bracket apparently.

To my surprise the dealer told me that the sound is normal and there's nothing they can do about it. The sound is by design. I have to pick up the car tomorrow morning. Being that I live in AZ air conditioning is a part of everyday life, thus, quirks like this become daily annoyances. I'm used to having a quiet Honda that works perfect. The G is just a newer car, more modern, more powerful and fun but I'm used to a certain level of quality which this car can't meet. I thought Infiniti was better than that.

So, did anyone found the actual reason for this sound? I have exactly the same thing as in Denn's video on my 05X.
