Before I purchase the used seat, does it sound like it's just the gear that's causing me problems? I can't figure out why the stealership (well, I can...$$$$) quotes me $3000 unless there's some other issue. But since the motor is working and attempting to move the seat, my thought is that it is in fact just the gear. Thanks for all the advice and support.

^ here's the thing: even if it was another aspect of the seat assembly $3K is a rediculous quote. you can get a functional seat for a fraction of that and use whatever parts you need from it, or the whole seat. there is no combination of issues that would justify $3k for this fix. i'd love to see the moron who actually fell for that dealer quote.

I'd like to consider myself one. I wouldn't be able to do anything w/out a set of instructions though. Meaning, I couldn't take the seat apart and put it together without knowing exactly what piece goes where...but I don't mind trying with some guidance from the experts on this forum. I think I just have to remove the 3 screws on the front side of the seat near the tracks to get access to the gear. Not too sure after that.

If you buy a junk seat, you can take it appart before you mess with yours so that any mistakes you make will be on it instead of the good one.

Can you post pictures of the gear and problem area? It would greatly help. I'm assuming it's the spiral gear located on the console side of the driver's seat track.

stop moving your seat around so much.

no one but me drives my car, i assume that's why i have no issues whatsoever with the tracks.
g35xchicago, what bearing are you talking about? i think that whenever you lower a car things are put at angles that the car isn't designed to be at and undue stress is induced, so this may be the problem you are looking at.

Regardless how much the seat is moved, it should function properly unless abused by owner. Treat a car right for the most part and they will do the same. But then again there are common issues that shouldn't happen in the first place. They are expensive because of the brand, they want to keep it exclusive to a point I suppose. Just like how you can get some parts cheaper at Nissan then Infiniti.

^ You missed the point of my post. I was saying that lots of companies (even outside of the automotive field) jack prices when they can get away with it, such as dealing with insurance or 3rd party warranties (or the government for that matter). The end result though is that prices end up going up across the board for no good reason.

I found someone else's pictures for the time being and pasted them below. I will be taking mine either tonight or tomorrow once I can get the black plastic piece removed.

EVERY car will have its quirks. EVERY car, some are more noticeable then others and some happen slightly more often but EVERY car will do its thing. THE best manufactures still average 20 problems out of 100 cars made and the worst are like 75 per 100 cars. on most of survey/ JD powers or whatever it is.

cant fix your seat problem buy one on ebay. for $350-400 shipped. a hand full of bolts and 3-4 clips to remove. should be VERY easy

How difficult is it to replace the motor too? my seat stopped even clicking yesterday...had to do the tap-tap to get it going. I found the gears and motor for $60 shipped.

i saw your post on needing step by step, that for sure will not happen. But for people who can take a look at things and get it, i dont think it is all that hard.

looking at the picture, i see a higher chance of stuff getting jammed and locking up the motor/track then a flaw in the design.
