Dog in back seat

Does anyone travel with their dog in the back seat? I am going on a long drive & want to take my dog. He is fairly large (Golden). I am worried about ruining the leather. He likes to sit up looking out the window. I'm afraid his claws will puncture the seat.
Anyone have any experience in this area?

Re: Dog in back seat

Hi.
I am not a G owner, nor a dog owner...just a wannbe lowly Maxima guy that has spent the past few months drooling over the finery of the Infiniti G35.
However, while going through my daily lurking, your question made me think of something I saw in SkyMall about a year. It was a heavy duty blanket that spanned the back seat and connected to the front headrests...effectively keeping your pet from falling on the floor in the event of an accident AND protecting your leather seats. Sadly, at least online, SkyMall no longer offers this...or at least I couldn't find it. They do however have this:

I also found this company out of the UK that actually has what I had seen in SkyMall, they do seem a bit pricey though:

Try a Google search for "Dog Car Hammock". There are tons of options. However, a nice old blanket would probably be sufficient if you don't want to get to tricky.

Good luck, and I hope this helped.
Edited by maxxximus on 08/27/04 02:02 PM.

Ha ! I have an airedale (the big terrier) and I take her in the car a few times per week. I cover the entire back seat (and backrest) with a large, thick towel. Tuck it in the between the leather and the top and bottom of the seats. No worries that way.

Re: Dog in back seat

We had to take our friends 9 month old lab once. It was in my Volvo and even though he was in the trunk and we have all season mats that pooch managed to leave some marks forever. I guess at that age the only thing they think with is their jaw muscle.

Hehe. I chew, therefore I am.

That gives me an idea!
I could lock him in the trunk with his head sticking out the pass-thru door!

If you do that, please post pictures. This is going to look very funny. PETA might get on your @$$ though

Re: Dog in back seat

I put my dog on the front seat floorboard. She is just tall enough to get her nose out the window. She has done this often enough that she moves her head anytime I move my hand to shift (she rests her head between the shifter and the hazard light button.)

Re: Dog in back seat

Buy a small horse trailer....you know like for Shetland ponies or something. Pull the dog behind you in the trailer. Please don't put the dog inside your G35......The best you will come out that way is no damage but lots of pet hair all over your beautiful G.

My sister takes her dogs in her vehicles, and they have pretty much destroyed the interiors of every car/truck she has owned....she gets [censored] for trade-in or resale value, and rightly so.

I bought a long bathroom mat (carpet on top, rubber on bottom) that I keep along the back seat. Works great, protects the leather against scratches and accidents.

Re: Dog in back seat

I travel with my 2 dogs now and then. A Great Dane in the back seat and a German Shepherd in the front (he's only 6 months old, soon, he'll need to be in the back, too). I have never had a scratch or puncture. Sometimes I put down an old comforter if I haven't trimmed their nails recently.
