How to read VIN # for transmission and model year?

I'm getting ready to buy a 3.5 vlsd pumkin from a salvage yard and they've got two of them, but I want to make sure they came from 6MTs. I've got the VINs. Does anyone know which number corresponds with the transmission type and year of car?

Usually the VIN# contains only engine code info. Trans data is usually not tied to a VIN.

However, the dealer might have additional info tied to each VIN and can tell you. In that case, ^+1

I remember somebody posted a link to decode the vin... I just don't remember where it was, or if it had AT/MT info. A search should turn it up.

a sure thing is that if the vin starts jnkcv51e it is 2wd and if it starts jnkcv51f it is awd. That may be able to narrow it down slightly for you

Thanks everyone. I've found a more local pumpkin that's from an 06 6MT G so I know it has 3.5/vlsd. I'll be looking at it and possibly getting it on Monday.

I've found 3 3.5/vlsd pumpkins within 130 miles of Kansas City selling from $300-325. I've been using www.car-part.com.

When you put it in, give us a DaveB breakdown of your thoughts. I'm curious to see if you have the same experience with yours I had with mine.

For the model year, read from the end of the VIN what the 8th digit is. If it's a "3" it's a 2003 or 2003.5; if it's a "4" it's a 2004, etc.
