Toasted an M3 today...

Those of you who know me know that even though I've spent more money on making this car fast than a sane person should, I'm not much of a street racer. But today on my way to take my kids to school I saw a very nice looking M3 up ahead in the right hand lane. I was in the left lane going about 61 (speedlimit: 60) and he was going about 52mph. There weren't any cars directly in front of us or behind us and there was an empty lane between us. I was listening to Siruis channel 21 trying to drown out the sound of my kids complaining about not wanting to eat what my wife had packed in their lunches. I don't know what the M3 guy was listening to because my windows were rolled up and so were his and his lips weren't moving. But I can't read lips anyway so it wouldn't have mattered even if he had been singing along.

It was cool outside--nice weather for the twin turbos--about 73 degrees, maybe 74. Hazy and humid but good humid rather than bad humid.

Without taking my eyes off the road, I reached down and casually adjusted my Profec boost controller, increasing the max boost from 8psi to about 9.5 psi, hands shaking slightly. I was in 6th gear, the M3 guy was probably in 5th gear but I don't know because I was about 20 feet behind him and there was an empty lane in front of us.

The M3 was a very nice blue in color. I wanna say dark blue but I can't remember. Looked like a recent model, newer than 1950 for sure. The driver looked well groomed though I'm not sure if he had a clean part in his hair or not because I was still behind him at the time.

So, I'm creeping up on him--he's totally unaware of what's about to happen of course. From the looks of things, he wasn't checking out his rear or side mirrors, so it's doubtful that he noticed my ricey-looking FMIC-friendly aftermarket bumper or see my Brembos. My car's pretty quiet now that I have turbos instead of the supercharger so I don't think he heard me coming either.

Anyway, we were headed Eastbound and I'm gaining on the guy since I'm going a good 8mph faster than he is (o wait 61-52 equals 9)... make that 9mph faster than he is but since the M3 is a sweet car I'm enjoying the view as I nestle right up in his blind spot.

Then, without warning... It happened. I stayed in 6th gear, of course, not wanting to reduce my gas mileage (what with the careful spreadsheet I keep) and with a touch of the gas pedal I'm IMMEDIATELY going 64 mph. I mean it happened instantly. One second I'm going 61 and BAM, within a second or two I'm going 64mph and I'm past him. It's like he didn't even see me coming. After 20 seconds, I'm a full car length or two ahead of him.

The best part is that as I cruise by I see that the dude talking on the phone. Yeah, right. Talking on the phone. He's just trying to cover up the humiliation of being creamed by a 4-door japanese sedan.

HAHAHA Good stuff man, i would LOVE to see some videos inside, out at the track and just about everywhere of your car LOL =) I also noticed that how quiet turbo cars are getting, or maybe it was always liek that but 350z's with TT kits are so quiet my sedna with exhaust is louder except for supras and other factory turbo cars of course. Is it because it is so free-flowing? And how do you get it sounding like a meaty exhaust with a nice BOV sound or turbo spool up, i want to turbo my car and its good for a sleeper but part of spending that money is the sickest sound from the turbo's haha.. Nice run anyway, i love i mean LOVE M3's, be carefull man. Martin

It's quiet because the turbo blades disrupt the flow of air and act as a muffler.

Don't worry, you still hear a definite spool-up, growl, and blow-off with turbos under wide-open-throttle.

I'll take videos as soon as I get my exhaust/boost issues all worked out. I'm busy with other stuff these days so it's taking some time.

Now this is the kind of post that makes G35Driver fun! It's a very welcome change from the controversial threads that's been inundating us recently... thank God for humor... no matter how subtle.

Steve,

When I was reading this, it was like I was at a movie waiting for the bomb to detonate as the bomb squad tries to figure out if it's the red wire or the green one (when, of course, it's always the green one! BBBAAAAMMMMM! Oh, I guess it was the red one.) Anyways, great story. I thought it was kind of odd that you started the RACING with your kids in the car. Besides, an M3, please! Now you should be looking for a 360 Modena! Later.

2 G or NOT 2 G, there is no question!
