Oil question

Well I cleaned my air filter, changed my oil and oil filter last week and it was all good but it was already lower than half way and I added more oil when I checked it this morning before I left for work. I thought probably I forgot to put the oil pan bolt or the oil filter on properly but nope, there was no leak when I checked it underneath. Just wondering if it could be the stupid valve covers. And if it is, how long can I just drive it like that, because i don't really have time to fix it but if it needs to be repaired quickly to avoid further major damage than I guess I will be up all night fixing it than. If anyone knows please tell me.

^What year? If it's 05/06 with the revup, it could be OC issue.
Even if it's 03/04 it could be a little OC, the dipstick doesn't show the full range of your oil, only about the first QT or two.

If mine gets a little low, I can add a half qt and bring it back up to full. Also, the VQ needs to sit for a good 30 mins or more to get a decent reading off the dipstick.

It's not the valve covers. When they leak, the amount is very small over a long period of time.

Did you run the engine after you did the oil change then check the oil to let oil go into the filter?

Yeah I did. When I changed the oil, I turned it on so the oil could go into the filter, let it run for a bit too to also see if anything was wrong but no nothing seemed like it. After I turned off the motor, I let it sit for an hour and when I went to go check it, it was topped off. Also it's a 2003, and ever since I got it I always noticed that it would lose oil but it was a little a bit at a time and I just figured it was normal because every car loses a little bit of oil as time goes by and especially the fact that I go and track it doesn't help at all. But recently since I hit around 96000 km I have noticed it to be losing oil quite rapidly and not even my '92 track MR2 would consume that much oil and I beat the living **** out of it on the track but I just really don't have the time to look into it so I am just letting it go by as time goes but I just want to know if it was the valve covers or an oil consumption problem how long can I just wait it out for until I need to fix it on the VQ. Because to be honest I am sorta new to the VQ motors, I know a lot more of Honda, BMW and Toyota motors.

Not all oils are equal. Some are more suseptable than others to loss by evaporation. Yes, motor oil is volatile. Check out the reports on the Amsoil website.
I put Amsoil 0w-30 in my G only to find that the volume was dropping faster than I liked. I used their 5w-30 to replenish and it slowed the loss rate. I will stick with the 5w-30 when I change my oil next time.

an hour isn't enough. I find i have to let my car sit at least 4 hours before checking the dipstick to check the level

Hello everyone here. I have just bought a 2005 G35 (a salvaged title though) last Friday. Just wondering...how to check the engine oil? I know how to check other cars but the G35, I have no idea...

thank you everyone =]

Same as any other car. Just have to find the dipstick. It's sort of buried behind the maf sensor.

^It's just a stupid design, that's all.
BTW, try not to push dirt off the guide into the dipstick tube when you go to put it back in.

A flashlight helps. It's a goofy design, but really not that difficult.
