Latest UOA on M1 10W30...
... not good! I'm not sure if it's my VQ or my driving habits, but I always seem to get higher than normal lead wear in my UOAs. I use the same oil in my Sequioa and get excellent results yet my VQ seems to get some real abuse. I will likely leave this fill in only for 4 - 5K, and switch to something else; hopefully I'll get a recommendation from BITOG.
I haven't posted this UOA on BITOG yet, but will tomorrow; I will probably email Terry Dyson to get his input as well. At this point I'm ready to head back to dino, maybe GTX with a 4K OCI and see how that pans out.
Talk about a downer... it appeared that the lead wear was trending downwards, so I was hoping that it would be closer to normal this time around, but **** man!.. I'm so pissed not knowing what I'm doing wrong. I don't race at all but I do drive aggressively and use the MM frequently.
Mostly "city" miles now but not typical city, more like suburbia miles. Fourteen miles to work and I only encounter about a dozen traffic lights, and no stop and go traffic. I'm driving less now, about 1300 miles per month vs. 1800 miles monthly a year ago. I use no additives in the fuel nor oil. Purolator Prem Plus oil filter.

It seems to be that your motor is different? They stated that you seem to be the only one seeing this issue so what can you do other than change your driving habits which you have already done. I would drive it and not worry.

Try Amsoil. My results were very good for a 6k miles on the oil.

Please don't get upset with me over this...it is an honest question and not a dig.
It is my understanding that Nissan/Infiniti recommends dino oil in the VQ engines. If this is correct maybe they know something that makes them lean in that direction. I just wondered why you and others run synthetic counter to the manuf. recommendations? Again, not flaming, just wanting to understand the why behind the initial switch to synthetic. Thank you.

I'm curious:
"It is my understanding that Nissan/Infiniti recommends dino oil in the VQ engines."
Where exactly did you get this understanding from?

Re: Latest UOA on M1 10W30...
There are two versions of the owner's manual... I believe the most current version says mineral based oil is recommended, while the initial manuals state just the minimum oil rating required.
I'm not an oil expert only a small oil "hobbyist"; I follow the tests and UOAs and occasionally update myself on BITOG.
Synthetic oils provide far superior lubrication than conventional oils. The superior lubrication better protects metal surfaces, reduces wear and flows more easily, the latter being extremely important during initial start up and the first minute of idling when all the oil is in the pan. My understanding is that using synth is always an improvement.
But there are still so many factors involved in making an engine run, that the oil factor may be so small that it could be considered inconsequential. I ran my last car, a 96 Altima, to 170K miles, changing the (conventional) oil fairly infrequently (anywhere between 5-10K), and it still ran and never consumed oil up to the day I sold it.... in fact, it's still on the road 18 months later. So how important is oil really, synth or dino? ... probably as important as your psyche (sp?) tells you it is....

Re: Latest UOA on M1 10W30...
I got that impression from reading on this and other G35 Forums - hence why I phrased it as "my understanding" and not as a "fact". I decided to look for myself. In section 10-5 of the manual under Technical and consumer information - Engine Oil and Oil Filter Recommendation I found the phrase "Infiniti recommends mineral based oils."
Is this why some people state that Infiniti recommends dino(natural) rather than synthetic oils?

YOU ARE CORRECT! I just checked my 2004 manual, and in section 9-5 it has the exact same statement about mineral based oils. Thank you. I guess I'm going from M1 back to dino.

I'm no expert, but I have heard that Castrol Syntec synthetic
oil is a mineral based oil. Using Castrol Syntec could offer the
best of both worlds to our G35s.

Re: Latest UOA on M1 10W30...
This is a common discussion topic in every automotive forum. My opinion is that synthetic really pays off in the long run. Engines don't "age" when on synthetic. I bought a new dodge (a truly generic car) and beat the crap out of it for 240,000 mile and its engine is as strong, clean (inside & out) and a 2 yr old. Dino or synthetic you won't see the difference for 100,000 mi. After that you will.

My UAO has been in for a while, just scanned it in, will post it later tonight. But, I too have increased Pb wear, like you do, but i only had the oil in for less than 3000 miles. Turbos are kinds hard on the engine i guess. I too will be getting a recommendation from BITOG
