G35x Questions

Hello all. I am new here....just doing some checking to see what people are saying about the G35s. I think I am going to try to talk the wife into letting me get one. What I am considering is an 04 G35x. (I don't like the rims on the 05). Currently have a 2k2 Maxima, and was wondering if the G35 Bose is a similar unit? Is it better or worse? Also, I've heard some rather poor gas mileage numbers...but I'm just a mild driver. Nothing hardcore. Any other comparisons to the Max, on things like trunk space, leg room etc would be greatly appreciated. Thx!

Re: G35x Questions

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but I'm picking up my 2004 G35x in about an hour - I'm trading in a 2000 BMW 323Ci (2-door).

Obviously for me the G35x has a significantly larger amount of room - especially in the trunk. I can easily fit two sets of golf clubs in the trunk, and the reclining seats with the premium package are really nice (not that I'll ride back there much).

In terms of gas mileage, I personally feel a lot of it is due to how you drive. If you drive aggressively, you are probably going to get poorer gas mileage. If you drive gingerly (like you mentioned), you should get respectable gas mileage, especially on the highway with a coefficient of drag of only 0.27. I am expecting to average around 20mpg (with a mix of aggressive and normal driving), a drop of around 5mpg from my 323Ci, but I will also have all wheel drive and 260HP, so I am more than willing to trade off that 5mpg :-D

As for the stereo, I've heard mixed reviews. If you are a true audiophile, than it will probably disappoint you, but I personally think it is pretty good, and I tend to keep my car stock so I don't want to bother with installing component speaker sets, amps, etc. Edmunds.com gave a review of the stereo here:

I hope this helps.

Re: G35x Questions

I agree with everything Richpike discussed. I've owned an 04 G35x (I don't like the 05 rims, either) for 1,200 miles now. I've checked my mileage a cuple of times. I drive about 40% city and 60% highway. I've been averaging 20 mpg. I am not an aggressive driver, but I do like to feel the power of the G when entering the highway.

Regarding the stereo, I owned a 350Z whcih had a Bose system in it that ABSOLUTELY SUCKED! Then I bought a Toyota Solara which had a JBL system in it which I was quite pleased with. Bose must have done something different in the Infiniti brand because the sound is MUCH better than it was in the Z. I still liked the JBL system better, however, but only marginally. If you are a true car audiophile I doubt you'll you'll be pleased, but if you just want some decent sounding tunes on your drive to work you'll be quite satisfied.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with my G. Yes, I wish the mileage was more like the Acura TL's, but it is a small sacrifice to pay for such a beautiful and high performing automobile.

I think the hardest part of your purchase (at least it was for me) will be convincing your wife you need such a nice car. Good luck. Let us know what happens.

Re: G35x Questions

I might be wrong but the coefficient of drag of .27 is with the full aero kit and diffusers. I think it's .28 or .29 without. Either way, awesome numbers. My 98 Eclipse had a Cd of .31.

Re: G35x Questions

I'm getting about 16-17 mpg but then again I do mostly local driving. My Subaru Outback gets about 20 mpg an it's a 4 cylinder AWD so, I'm not terribly upset about the mileage on my X. I agree with fotodad, the perfromance is well worth the sacrifice. As far as the stereo goes, I listen to a lot of music but don't consider my self an audiophile. I have the Bose premium system and it does more than fine for me. I keep the bass and treble on max. I've heard on some thread that the complaints about the stereo are mainly for the coupe for some reason.

I've got almost 10K miles now, made some light mods and am totally happy with the car.

Re: G35x Questions

The Cd is .27 without the rear spoiler and .26 with the rear spoiler.

Gas mileage is about 20 mpg ( I think), which is not terrible. I was surprised by the taut handling, smooth engine and gear shifting (5sp AT), and relatively smoot ride. I believe that the AWD system is the best because it does not compromise the RWD platform as it directs 75% of power to the rear on start and up to 100% of power once the car is in motion (correct me if I'm wrong).

I test drove and researched a C320 4Motion, 330xi, Audi A4 3.0 Quattro, and a Acura TL. This is by far the most bang for the buck, best handling and quickest car of the lot (the Acura is the closest in performance). It pulls .86 on the skidpad while the German cars pull around .83...in other words you're getting the handling and close to the power of the old 540i (282 hp). I believe that there was another posting that alluded that the car had the same performance of the old M5...

I guess I'm love witht the car because I went from 2 sports cars (Eclipse GS-T and Mazda RX-7) to a Camry for a bit and am a bit deprived...

If you are going for the 04 iteration make sure to read up on the dude that bought his in VA for just under invoice or right around there because they're coming out with a new one in 05...

Happy car hunting!!!

Re: G35x Questions

Hello all.....I still haven't made a decision. I got busy and haven't had the time to make it to the dealer...which is another problem. There really isn't a dealer that close. I think 20 miles is the closest. I have looked at some stats though. I guess another concern is the size. Looking closer at the specs, it seems a bit smaller than my Maxima. I think mostly in the back seat....which really would impact ME too much. Also now considering a Titan....so that would be a whole different forum altogether.
