Stock flywheel, single or dual mass?
Stock flywheel, single or dual mass?
Hi,
My name is Ben, and I just picked up an 03 manual two weeks ago. It's got a 108k miles on it, so I bought it anticipating an upgrade to the clutch. I've put 450 miles on it, and now the clutch is slipping badly and stinks. Of course there were no signs of this two weeks ago when I test drove it for an hour.
So, I took it over to a mechanic and he says that Infiniti either used a single mass flywheel or a dual mass, but that there is no way to tell without dropping the transmission first. I've searched the forums and everywhere else for some truth to this, but can not find any.
This mechanic also wanted 550 just to drop the tranny to find out. I've found another garage that said they install the new clutch for 300, if I provide the parts. I'm thinking I'll go with that garage since the other guy quoted me 1200 for a clutch kit that pairs with the dual mass flywheel, and that's not including a new flywheel either.
So I have three questions.
First, is there a way to tell which flywheel Infiniti used without taking the car apart?
Second, is it true that a clutch kit for a single mass flywheel won't work for a dual mass one?
Third, can I just swap a dual mass flywheel and supported clutch in there if it had a stock single mass?
I'm a little bummed that I have to replace it so soon , and would like to salvage the flywheel if it just needs to be turned. I would prefer to just install a new clutch and pressure plate if possible, and want to have the right one for the garage that quoted me 300.
Thanks ahead of time for any insight,
Ben

Oem flywheel is dual mass.
You can't really resurface the oem flywheel because I've been told that not many machines are setup to handle that type of flywheel.
That being said, before you invest in a aftermarket flywheel you need to do a search on my350Z narrowed to the engine section titled "chatter".
All the oem replacement clutches that I know of mount to the oem flywheel and the single mass replacements. Course I haven't had reason to look at any clutch that was either a oem replacement or no more then a "stage 1".
