Have to replace my engine, couple questions.

Hey guys come to find out i spun a rod bearing in my 04. I am planning on just replacing it with a used engine. The engine i found has a little ove 70K. My questions are at what millage should the timing chain and tensioners be replaced, also what about the water pump. I just wanna do whatever preventative maintance i can while the engine is out. Any suggestions are apreciated.

The answer is pretty much never on any of those parts.

I wouldn't say never, as chains can develop slop, but that is usually at high miles. At 70k I woulnt worry about it.

I would probably replace the water pump since the engine is already out of the car.

^+2... Change the pump. It'll be easier now.

You also may want to look into headers. I can't speak from experience on the G, as I haven't done headers yet. But those who have say it's not an easy job at all.

I replaced the engine on one of my Trans-Ams though, and put the headers on the new engine before it went back. It wasn't too bad, but would have been a real pain with the engine installed.

Slap the TT kit on while the motor is pulled. It's way easier then

I can't remember the last time I heard about someone having to replace a water pump on a VQ35 (this site and the my350z). Replacing water pumps on VQ30s (Maxima) would happen once in a blue moon, but the pump wasn't the problem, it was the o-ring gaskets.

If it were me, I'd just pop the access cover and see if it's leaking. If it's not, I wouldn't bother.

Cheap insurance! I would probably change the chain too,its easy and that much longer you have to go till you run into problems.
Chains do stretch as you know.

I've been working with VQs since 1998 and I've read of one instance, VQ30 Maxima, that needed a chain replacement and that was because the tensior failed, not the chain.
