1st to 2nd gear pause

When I really stomp on it after I shift into 2nd gear, there seems to be a pause or hitch in the acceleration, then it picks right up. Is this experienced by anyone else and if so is there a fix. All I have is a ztube and popcharger.
Thanks for your help.

Re: 1st to 2nd gear pause

Not sure if you have a AT or a 6mt, but I think this has been discussed in the past. Most modern cars nowadays have computers that would retard the timing a little to allow for proper shifting and timing/detonation control. On a MT car, I would imagine it helps the VDC system control itself too (to not allow wheelspin)...

On my AT sedan, I know that the timing retards like crazy on the first to second shift... It almost feels like a MT car, when someone floors it, let's off the gas and guns it again in second gear. Sounds cool as hell though - but I am sure it costs bigtime in 1/4 miles runs... On the auto at least...

"computers that would retard the timing a little"

The timing is progressively retarded 20+ degrees just before then slowly comes back after the actual shift.
Whole shift process should take less than a second.......though the acceleration may be reduced for 1.2 seconds usually less depends on temperature.

Q45tech: Thanks for the clarification.

So this is the Manual shift sensation we feel and hear? I'm sure someone driving right next to my sedan under WOT first to second shifts think that I have a MT.... Feels like someone feathers throttle and clutch during the shift.

Yes.. I have a 6mt. So this is normal and I can't do anything but turn off the VDC?

turned off VDC and there is a noticeable difference. But it seems like I am fishtailing. Is that normal without VDC? Much faster though.

jimmcrae:

Is your car an '03 or an '04 6MT ? The '04's came with a limited slip differential, whereas the early models ('03) did not .

With VDC on (normal), my car bogs hard when I shift from 1st to 2nd at WOT, but with VDC off the limited slip differential hooks up and it gets strong rubber into 2nd, sometimes "fishtailing" a little, as you say.

I also read on another thread a few months ago that you can never really completely shut down the VDC system without pulling the fuse.

Don't know, myself. Anyone ??

Reset the ECU - procedure are on the DIY board. I have seen this compaint many times and this seems to fix it all the time. The timing should have little impact on shift ET's.

Re: 1st to 2nd gear pause

I believe the fishtailing you experience when you "romp" on it is a result of a phenomenon we in the industry call POWER You see, under power and without VDC, your car is a little loose. Loose is FAST and on the edge of out of control (not to quote Days of Thunder or anything hehe). Just don't let it get away from you, and turn the VDC ON in wet conditions.

One question, is this your first rwd car? The reason I ask is because a little fishtailing is normal in all rwd cars and maybe that why it feels a little loose to you. One last remedy is larger rear meats. I can hardly break my rears loose anymore (straight line acceleration)
