After 10K miles my car feels faster?

I don't think it's me but after recently reaching the 10K mark on the odometer, my G feels faster. Throttle response is quicker. Is this still break-in effect or am I nuts?

Thats because it is. Cars do get faster the more you drive them. In fact after 40,000 miles cars go from 0-60 almost half second faster than when they were new.

Not all cars. The VQ gets stronger after time and is meant to last forever. Fords start dying around 40k =)

Re: After 10K miles my car feels faster?

Just wait till you get over 250,000 miles on the engine, everything will be loose as a goose.

At some point the wear [reduced friction] will cross over with reduced BMEP [from ring wear] and the graph will turn downward...........you defer this point by frequent oil changes.

Usually from 50k -150k things are pretty constant!

Many people don't keep cars long enough to actually break in the engine.

Q45tech:

I know what you mean about the actual "break in" of an engine. I've got a '96 Accord EX 5MT (2200 CC SOHC/VTEC)with 165,000 miles, which we've had since 22,000 miles, and it runs much stronger & revs more freely now than it ever did ! I'd say it's in the prime of it's life, & we've always changed the oil/filter at 3,000 mile intervals (dino oil). Drove it to Texas last year and ran 105 MPH for 1 Hour and 10 minutes at one stretch (3:00 AM across Arizona), strong and good - ran like a scalded dawg !

Son's got an '88 Acura Integra 5MT (1600 CC DOHC) he bought in '92 w/ 50,000 mi., now has 224,000+ mi. and still runs good, but although it's loose, revs hard, and runs great, it's definitely getting "tired", and he's says there has been a slight but gradual dropoff in power these past 20,000 miles or so, so he's on the downward end of that graph you mentioned, now. Dino oil/filter changes every 3,000 mi. ALSO: Just remembered that this Acura was also stolen in '98 with about 140,000 miles on it, and was recovered in an industrial area where the kids meet to street race in a nearby city. They had put about 1200 miles on it in a week, drove the crap out of it (needed new brakes, clutch slipping), then stripped the stereo, rims & tires, and abandoned it. Wonder how many miles of normal driving THAT cost us on wear & tear, too ??

Also have a Mazda B-2000 5MT pickup (2000 CC) w/220,000+ mi.(same maintenance as others) we've owned since new, and it's been on it's "downward curve" for about 50,000 miles or so, I'd say. Still runs good, but power is down by 15-20% from new, I'd say (could be the carb, too-it just passed smog here in Cali, but barely. All those miles & no carb rebuild?). I believe this engine is based on an older, outdated design though - never intended for even 200,000 miles of life.

Hope my G35 runs to 200,000+ - my wife wants it when I'm done with it, which means in about 4 years and 130,000 miles.

Re: After 10K miles my car feels faster?

This is my second G35, my first one was totalled at just under 13K miles, and I kept thinking to myself that the new car doesn't feel as powerful as my old one (an '03.5 6MT). Then I have to remind myself that my current G35 is still young and tight (keep your minds out of the gutter). I can definetly notice that the new car doesn't rev as smoothly and eagerly as my old one.

I had an '00 S2000 which kept getting stronger well past 10K miles (parted with it at just over 22K miles). I also had an '87 Accord LXi hatchback which I recently gave my my nephew with close to 200K miles on it. It still runs great, doesn't burn any oil, doesn't have any leaks, and still pulls strongly in the upper revs. However, it feels like it's getting a little tired now or maybe it's just that 110 hp is nothing compared to the other cars I've been driving. After the first 10K miles or so, I always used Mobile 1 in it.

Re: After 10K miles my car feels faster?

Well, if you've got an automatic and you don't race constantly, it may slow down over time. The good news is that it's only temporary. When I had the auto G and reset the ECU, it REALLY picked up. My car chirped the tires when the auto transmission shifted itself into second. That was the baddest auto trans I've driven. It's a real blast to drive even in auto, but the stick is incredible. This one only has 15K miles on it, but it feels like it has to break in some more, still very fast though. The auto had more miles on it and accelerated hard, except for a dead stop.

Re: After 10K miles my car feels faster?

I never noticed any difference. It's not like 9999 miles and 10,000 boom its way faster... I'd have to see a slip at 1200miles and another at 10K to believe you are really going to see a significant difference. My bet would be no difference at all.

Re: After 10K miles my car feels faster?

I agree with the poster above completely.

Since you drove the car all the way from 0 miles to 10K miles, you experienced the change over such a long sampling period. The only way you could notice a difference is if you were able to drive your car at 1 mile and then right after at 10K.

Don't forget the effect of cooler air now that we are getting towards October. I'm not even at 2K miles yet, but a nice cool night the other night had the car feeling a bit more powerful.

Re: After 10K miles my car feels faster?

This is true. I'm in NJ and we've been cooling off at night lately. Another weather related thing is that I notice that my exhaust (HKS muffler) sounds louder in damp weather.

BTW - the changes I noted before were not like adding 20hp. Just subtle.

No, you are not nuts. After 40K it will feel faster still. I just passed 43K and it feels like it just wants to haul *** everywhere.
