Rear Windows

Can someone please explain to me why some drivers have their rear passenger windows rolled down while cruising on the highway with nobody in the backseat?

This seems to vary among the different car manufacturers.

Is it that they want they want the fresh air but not the drag?

I don't know about the drag part of it, but I do that so I can get the fresh air without feeling like I'm in a wind tunnel.

umm, it's probably because they like the breeze of cool air without turning on the HVAC system. or maybe they fart a lot and need to evacuate the foul air.

i'm not sure what different car manufacturers has to do with it - i'm sure any vehicle could drive with it's back windows down. after all, the driver controls this, not the manufacturer.

On sunny days, I'll open the sun roof and lower the right rear window an inch or two. This will create a nice brezze that sweeeps around my left shoulder and out the roof. This gives my AC a rest.

id much rather use the ac

open windows = dirty interior

might as well enjoy the ac while you have it. An ac compressor can lock up anytime

when I want to have wind but not directly at me, I open the the driver side front and rear windows, where the passenger will get all the wind

Or if I need to get rid of some dust, open the passenger windows and all air hits me but goes out on the passenger side..thats the wonders of having 4 doors..

If you only roll down the front windows, you get more of a 'buffeting' effect... it's worse on some vehicles...
My work truck is a 96 suburban and the AC is broke, so I ride with the windows down, it will drive you insane if you only roll down the front windows.

I don't think that there is any such thing as a "subtle breeze" in the windy city...

but thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to try it sometime...

I only use the ac if I really have to. I would rather be open to the world. So when its nice weather....all four windows down and sunroof open.

I much prefer my windows being down rather than AC. The AC being off adds like 53 Hp!

Ac on does rob horsepower, it's not 53 hp maybe, but the load of the compressor engaged plus the heat soak of the engine from the extra heat added by the condenser does contribute to some hp loss with the ac on.

The g35 is actually pretty good with the ac on. It's one of the better cars in terms of not feeling it. I've owned cars that feel like you lost 100 hp with the ac on

you're talking like 5hp, maybe 12-15 at the most

15hp loss vs sweating in Texas on the way to work.....

now if we are talking about an old school 78 chevy...yes horsepower loss will be greater
