sounds like your 5AT did an auto downshift to 4th gear. perfectly normal.

^ I thought about that, but then i changed to MM mode into 4th gear, and it revved even higher, and i felt the physical changing of gears.

Are you starting in D or in MM-5th gear? Does the same thing happen regardless of which mode you're in?

i started in D, 5th gear. I experience the jump in RPM, i changed to MM, which automatically changes down to 4th, and i felt the physical changing of gears and an even higher (but small) rpm shift.

this happens slightly in 4th MM and 5th MM too without changing any gears.

Dave, it's the intake cam switching to VVL on mode.

I notice this on my X and hope to either smooth it out or move the power in a bit to pick it up at a lower RPM. Love that feeling like someone kicks it in the ****.

Mine has this same noticeable surge around 3500 rpm and it became more pronounced after the HR y-pipe was installed about a month ago.

Yeah, I noticed it that too.

I kind of like the surge, but then I'm left to wonder why can't I get more power before that if there is so much power at 3500rpms? I have a hard time believing it's the VVL because I don't feel any such surge doing the same thing in 2nd or 3rd and from what I've read in the FSM, the VVL doesn't become entirely active until around 4500rpms. I believe power surge is a Nissan nanny to keep some owners from getting annoyed by jumpy throttles in the sub 3000rpm range.

funny i think to myselff as reading this , i have a AAM plenum spacer , z tube , rev up air box k N air filter stock box.

i feel that power surge all the time , especialy more wit the AAM spacer , also when the car is on auto mode and not MM it will shift higher in the redline than it used to . as if the gear is streching just a bit longer.

feels great ! ,

I also have had a 200sx se-r VVL and it felt similar to this just not as pronounced as in the se-r. if you ever driven a sr20ve powered car you know what it feels like.

Dave i think its the combination of all your mods that are making this happen.
and in esence that is what all our mods do is change the characteristics of our cars .

Same here i do it for fun all the time, feels like I have an actual turbo in the car lol. Once i put on my rays 18's it felt even better, the car felt much quicker. Makes it more fun to enjoy.

Cant believe rays 18 with brand new tires are that much lighter than stockers which are an inch smaller.
